Lots of 90s and 2000s humor seems really distasteful now bc it was super mainstream to demonize LGBT peeps. Even hella wholesome shows like Boy Meets World had some jokes where the punchline was literally "person is gay"

I dont know if it was intended but the song reminded me of Ace Ventura, which has maybe the most notorious example (to me) of distasteful 90s humor

its from a different time, even when you hear her voice the laugh track plays

there were a ton of jokes like that in 90s/early 00s sitcoms. and the jokes were probably worse the further back in time you go.

shouldnt be a surprise. HIMYM has a joke about game revolving around identifying the trans person in the apartment lobby full of women and they call it "who's hot and who's Scott"

things change as time goes on. but as long as the trend of removing those older episodes 10 years later from existence (like Community D&D episode, a few Always Sunny episodes, etc.) doesn't continue, then just don't worry about it.

Compared to some of the shit that went on in that show like Megan's friend literally seeing Drake as her boyfriend, I'd say this ranks on 'low' in terms of fucked up shit.

I feel like this was often the case in portrayals of trans women in late 90's and 2000's sitcoms.

I know Two and a Half Men, Just Shoot Me, and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia did it that way.

I'm leaning to believe the D&J scene had no serious phobic intent. I mean yeah there's the obv. forward/borderline assault, but Josh being taken aback (and not actually offended) is pretty realistic.
As with anyone or anything that isn't what you first thought, you'll get surprised. Shouldn't necessarily hate it, but you don't have to indulge in it either.

I remember that. The winner nervously accepted to go on with the relationship. They probably didnt make it past the episode.

But yeah, this is typical from most "comedies" from anytime before early 2000s.

Yeah let me make it very clear this is more "product of the times" than an actual problem.

I'm just surprised at what shows intended for kids/pre-teens could get away with back then.

I do remember one transphobic joke from Sister Sister though; something along the lines of her names Amanda because shes a man, duh! and school bully Rhonda became male over summer break so they were written out of the show.

Other than that, all completely wholesome.
