For casino poker to not be gambling you have to sit there for hours and hours barely playing, waiting for an especially advantageous hand.

Poker isn't a gamble heavy as slots or roulette. There's atleast a part of it that requires skill, and it's hard to go broke just betting on poker because unless you're ass you will atleast go home with something most of the time, unless it's winner takes the entire pot

That doesn't really work either. Not only are you making yourself extremely exploitable to good players, you're getting eaten alive by rake.

That's why I don't love playing no-limit cash games. If you're not sitting down with a comparable stack to the rest of the table you will always be at a disadvantage.

At least tournament play gets you on a level playing field chip wise, and slow play can help you at least get into the money. Fuck re-buys though, I hate that shit.

eh it can work up to the 2/5 level, while theres usually 1-3 decent players at the table that would exploit you for being a knit, theres usually at least 1 fish at the table with vpip over 60% thats enough to make you profitable because more often than not youre getting max value for your hand against those players. The rake also doesnt generally kill knits because they play such few pots to begin with, and some casinos dont even have rake per pot but instead charges a flat fee every 30 mins. Most of the grinders/regulars at the lower stakes fare relatively well from knit play in my experience, table selection is mightily important for these players though, its an awfully boring way to play however. Competition starts getting stiffer starting at 5/10 and beyond, its hard to pull off being a knit at bigger stakes because even the bad players are quite aggressive whereas in the lower stakes the bad players are passive and easy to play against. This is for live poker though, playing knitty is rarely profitable playing online because the overall player pool is just tougher.

im not a gambler. Just lost $400 and Im the type that doesnt go to the ATM to draw out more, Im just going home because I reached my limit. Still have way more than enough money to pay my bills. Also Im single with no children. Not much responsibilities, so losing this money isnt like Im endangering my family of anything crazy.

Presumably because you're the exact perfect target for the casino.

Smart enough to get sucked in with technical play, impulsive enough to not care when the technical aspect blows up in your face every time.

I made the right play though. With a flush draw, you want to get all the money in with a set.

Just saying you went all in with a set and got sucked out on doesn't make it the right play. To properly breakdown the hand we need positions, starting stack sizes, and preflop action to start.

Also generally if you have a strong hand and have a sense the villain is on a draw, you want to charge them good for milking but not scare them off with a monster bet. But without stack sizes it's hard to say how big a scare that was. Shoving in that spot doesn't seem like it's optimal to me but yet again, lacking info.

Poker is certainly gambling if you're not willing to put in the sample size to mitigate the affect of variance from your overall results. Your average recreational player probably doesn't play 1000 hands a year, and people who play more regularly probably doesn't even play 10,000 hands, both of which are absolutely paltry sample sizes to gauge your actual win rate. The reason the people who play poker professionally are not gambling is because they put in the volume to a point where they mitigate the affect variance has on their results. But for your average recreational player, since they're obviously not gonna put up that volume, poker can be effectively seen as a gambling activity even though skill plays a role, but again skill only plays a bigger role in larger volumes.

I am not discouraged by this loss. Like I said before, I was the favorite to win the hand, and when he called my bet of $250 (for all of my chips) I was happy even though the outcome was that I lost.

Last time I went all-in with pocket AA and got called by Q10 and he drew out on me to win a $750 pot for all of my money again (I had an 85% chance of winning but I still lost.)

Even though I am now down $1,200, I am confident because each time I got the money in good as they say, meaning I had the best odds to win. I will not hesitate to play again for another $400 in a couple of weeks. Its all about building volume over time like you said, assuming you arent gambling and taking 5% or even 0% chances (called drawing dead) for all of your money.

if you take an 85% chance 10,000 times, you will make a lot of money in the long run.
