I think I've hit that sweet spot where you're just good enough to know just how not good you really are.

Like, playing in random casual matches I tend to do great. But once I reach a new rank and play against someone of that tier they usually play circles around me. Then you go to the subreddit and see ridiculous tricks like constant midair juggling and other stuff you don't think you'll ever be able to pull off.

That's one thing (among others) that turns me off about online gaming. Getting that ridiculously skilled on a technical level is something I've never been interested in, even in games that I love.

Well, that and the fact that bad attitudes seem to be proportional to skill level. I'm always friendly, sporting and usually complimentary on a really good play. But if I or a teammate fail to stop a goal or accidentally own-goal, you'll see a lot of "thanks!" or "nice save!" Hell, yesterday my partner in a tournament actually started scoring for the other team just because we were down by two points. It's like attitudes are low with scrubs, rises a bit with intermediate, and drops again among people who take the game seriously.

I generally stick with the Rumble mode or whatever its called, with the powerups because even if you suck you can do something to really turn the tide of the game with a powerup.

We still had three minutes left when my partner defected on me. Then later another partner wanted to forfeit after two minutes, but I kept going and we went on to win the tourney. I rarely give up and prefer to keep going to gain experience, especially against better players.

Jumping into a new rank really changes everything

im usually pretty comfortable around Platinum but the minute I move up into Diamond, its like a completely different world. I can hold my own (kind of) but damn I have to be on my game the entire time locked in

Im always hovering around Gold III - Platinum II. Ive never been dedicated enough to get better than that. I love playing RL though. So much fun.

I've been in the champ1-2 range for months and let me tell you it gets far more toxic as you get higher
