Because churches and the right wing media spent the previous two decades telling people to distrust mainstream news outlets. And mostly not even for the good reasons to distrust mainstream news outlets.

I don't really think anyone knows, besides from the climate for it being very rip. With so much sensationalism, poor quality, bad faith journalism along with actual fake news, wh was able to somehow make it work.

Being able to properly repress and control the newscycle is needed in a fascist though. Maybe it was just so natural, it worked?
