If I use 30 hours a week and have two days of regular, unpaid time off, I could end up with a little over 5 weeks straight. I know the company would never allow that, but how nice would it be to have almost a month and a half off?

I usually keep it just south of 200 hours. It'll make the day I quit all the more sweet.

I highly doubt I could get 160 hours every year. I've been at Walgreens for the past 5 years, I just never used PTO. I only looked into it after someone else saw how much I had and they were like, "Holy shit, you have a lot of PTO." I was like, "I do?" and they were like, "Yeah, you should use some of it."

Can you get paid for all your hours of unused PTO when you quit?

I get about 4 weeks + sick time a year. I am about to use part of one week next week. I dunno what to do with the rest of it yet.

Usually yeah. I work for the state of California and they put a soft cap on PTO now (you can go over the cap, but they make you sign a plan to reduce your saved PTO within a year).

The reason the added a cap is because they had some guys in high paying positions retire with like 20 years worth of PTO saved up and they had to pay them out for it. The state did not like that at all lol.

The way everyone's talking about their PTO is making me think I should have way more than just 5 weeks worth after being here 5 years.

It really depends on the company. Back when my ex still worked at McDonald's, they were giving her 1 hour of PTO per 30 hours worked, which was about 5 days per year. Sounds about what you're getting if you have 5 weeks after 5 years.

Yeah it's pretty bad actually that you earned that over 5 years. Are you sure that's how you accumulated it. Most places only let you rollover so much from year to year.

Australia's law is 4 weeks a year for full time workers that accrues/doesn't expire, and 10 days paid sick leave per year (same thing).

Most companies do have a rule about how much in a row you can take off, or they won't let it just accrue to absurd levels due to the liability for the company (my company starts getting shitty if people accrue more than 6 weeks annual leave and starts asking people to either cash some in or take time off).

I just got hired on (from a temp position) in Feb and I was given 2 weeks up front. Theres a cap though, not sure how much though. I just use it as I go. Leave early when theres no work/take a day off when theres no work. But for me being at work is a way to relieve the stress from my home life.

Last company I worked for gave you a certain amount per hours worked, but trying to use it was next to impossible. Took my last 2 weeks off and made them pay for it.

At my job, I basically get 1 days worth of PTO every paycheck. I've only used it 4 times in 2 years, and I got 260+ saved up.

Bosses are kinda ehhh on using more than a week tho

My business only does 1 hour vacation given every 40 hours worked. So thats 48 hours a year. Which. Adding holidays with that. You can stretch out two weeks maybe?

Were only allowed to have 80 hours from the previous year, so we have to use up to that point. We accrue it at an okay speed at least.

For sick leave, I kind of get it though. My job separates sick leave and vacation. Sick leave can't be planned in advance and if we take more than 3 sick days off in a row, the manager is allowed to ask for a doctor's note. But if we get injured and need to be off work for an extended amount of time, we can use sick leave for that.

So I only use it when I'm actually sick.

PTO and Vacation hours reset in September. Sitting on 105 vac and 40 PTO. Vac gets payed out if it isn't used, but pto just reset, so its use it or lose it.

What I meant cashing them in.

My job pays even if you don't use them, even PTO.

I'll use some during the time if I miss hours on slow weeks.

Sure, use 4 to make 40.
