I'm going to be helping my local food pantry next Friday. First time I've ever done any charity work.

What are some charities you have done? What was your experience like? Anyone know of any kid friendly ones?

Very little... There is one charity where all you have to do is package emergency kits. I'd volunteer there more but it's 2 hrs away lol.

Also, this reminds me of the cashier topic.

I do it weekly. It' the best feeling in the world. The amount of positivity you find at those events (from both the volunteers and those you are helping) is very refreshing. It really turns a sour day into a better one and is a good stress reliever.

I've helped with mobile food pantries, setting up church thrift stores, delivering food and supplies to the homeless, serving at a soup kitchen, picking up litter down the highway, mowing yards and painting houses for single moms and the elderly, gardening, and building houses. I really recommend everyone tries it. It changes your outlook on life.

Also, I'm married, so this doesn't apply to me, but it's a great place to meet women. I've had two volunteers ask me out during these things (in each case I didn't have my wedding ring on due to the hands-on work we were doing). It shouldn't be your main motivation, but it is a good opportunity to meet people.

My grandma's church ran a food bank. We'd give out boxes of food to anyone that needed them. I helped pack the boxes and occasionally hand them out.

Used to visit the old folk's home and keep them company. That didn't last too long, too many people around, too much interaction, too many elderly people asking me to help them get out.

Volunteered as a camera man for my church's tv show for a few years and always helped out with any special events they had. Like community food drives and special events.

Haven't done a lot in recent years though.

I had a job picking up blood donations and driving them to hospitals.

It wasn't volunteer work, I was employed by a courier service, but the pay was so bad, it may as well have been. Felt it was worth mentioning though.

In my teens and early 20's yes. I was part of the NAACP youth league. And I also volunteered at Habitat for Humanity a few times. Not actually building houses, just helping direct crowds during events they had.

Yeah, Ive done some charity work.

Anyway, most were of the local type of service, where you help clean up a beach, roadside, bus stop, that sort of thing. Ive painted schools, given presentations to students, did some morale support for Special Olympics like cheering and basically showing up for the athletes who arent expecting anyone except their families. Did some other stuff, but its all over the place like collecting toys for kids at Christmas and food for families in need during the holidays. Lots of fundraisers too.

It was all good, so no regrets on my end. I hope more people get involved. Its just so much more fun and easier when more people show up.
