Why

They're fun

I played a lot of them as a kid, I started disliking them more as I got older and now I barely play them

Because they're infinitely better than most of the garbage out there. That applies to earlier consoles as well as current ones.

When you were poor and didnt get many games you want games that either had a mountain of content or insane replay value.

A lot of JRPGs in that era (mid to late 90s fo me) could fill that void.

Dragon Warrior 7
Star Ocean 2
FF7 and 9
Breath of Fire 3 and 4
Rhapsody a Musical Adventure

Those were my main RPGs on my PS1 and thats what got me hooked

Well Pokemon is most kids gateway into JRPGs mainly because of how accessible it is. It's the highest grossing franchise of all time for a reason.

I think Pokmon is kind of its own thing beyond JRPG. Its just Pokmon

I loved to read and play games dude so they were so good when I had the time to play them.

I played paper Mario 1 and 2 and Pokemon yellow, silver and ruby. other than that the only jrpg I played in my life is Yakuza 7. I don't like the genre at all but PM and Yakuza LAD slap

Well they usually have bright colors, fancy art styles, and lots of content and replay value for the price. Not to mention they are probably most kids first taste of a complex narrative so it leaves a strong impression.

When I was a kid, I never played a JRPG until mid teens. My first game was FFVII and my old best friend just got a PS1 and a bunch of games from his grandmother and one of htem was that and I tried it. Loved it...

I kinda felt the same. But they did such a good job with the soundtrack and stuff. There is just some weird shit in there I have to roll my eyes through. Like beach trips and stuff. That actually made me turn my ps4 off

I mostly got into jrpgs because I love fantasy stories, and didn't know much about anime as a kid.

thats pretty fair actually. It was easy to talk things like that with school mates. It was when I started playing FF11 I made my first account to post on the boards.

They were fun when they were actually quality for their era. Nowadays, they always seem so...... cliche, overdone, or hollow.

Pokemon was really the only "JRPG" I played as a kid. I grew to appreciate them more as I got older.

I can get in on this. It does feel like a lot of them are just...cookie cutter. I think its most of those really 'anime' looking things. There's a lot of great ones though. I still enjoy Tales, Dragon Quest, and Final Fantasy but taking a look at a lot of stuff, its just changed. There's still some great stuff but its mostly action rpgs nowadays.

Facts you wouldn't even be playing it for the story and doing missions, you'd just run around blowing shit up and raising your wanted level and seeing who can last the longest LOL. And you'd ask shit like "Yo where did you find that last car you were driving?" or looking around for the spawn point of the attack helicopter. When you die you pass the controller to the next person and it was their turn. You'd laugh every time an NPC yelled out a curse word. Good times.
