Twerking, as in the dance style, has been a thing since the early 90s. The word has been around since the late 90s.

The kids these days out here using "balderdash".

I loved it. Mei and company were very deliberately cringey in a preteen in the 90s sort of way. Also the wild animation choices were well done and charming. Like the anime glass breaking expression when Mei is devastated early on and the four girls doing a synchronized cheesy exaggerated laugh at the concert. The family dynamics were also sweet. Also wasn't expecting a fucking kaiju fight lol.

I thought it was amazing

Im not a fan of bringing the Cal-Art style into 3D animation but it didnt bother me enough to change my opinion of the whole movie, which was that it was pretty good. I liked it better than Luca, but maybe not quite as much as Soul.

Does it hold less impact?

It was a good movie, but nothing spectacular. I like that it does tackle generational trauma, does bring back nostalgia of the very early 2000's, talking about puberty and periods (this was by far the dumbest thing to have a controversy on) and the animation is very lively. The issue I have is that the movie is very predictable and I felt other films handled this stuff better. The mom was very cartoonishly overbearing. Like I'm Vietnamese and even my mom and aunts were like, "What is she doing?" (I was watching it with them) when she confronted the convenient store worker with the picture Mei drew or how she followed Mei to school to give her pads, some of my aunts I would describe as "tiger moms". I guess my biggest issue with the film was that it always showed the Mom as incorrect while her friends as being the right choices the majority of the time in the movie. I wish it was more nuanced than that. With that said, I understand why a lot of people enjoyed it and I will still hold the opinion that the Dad was clearly the best character in the movie.

I mean it did make the movie more interesting instead of the "I need to hide my identity" cliched, but I tried not to think too hard about it. I know this movie is very metaphorical, and some of these women are making bank off stuff like OF, but yeah her being 13 years old doing it was very hard to ignore.
