Is there even a single person in the IWF who isn't on gear at this point? They need to just ban the sport already or undo all the rules, because the farce has been going on for like 50 years at this point.

The interesting problem is how the intense corruption in the sport has basically meant that wealthy countries have dominated it, not necessarily the best athletes. Like the chairman was literally busted running a racketeering ring where he would falsify tests for countries that paid him hundreds of thousands in cash. Even worse, he would proactively make sure that athletes that didn't play by these rules got busted. Gabriel Sincrain had his entire career tanked because he snubbed the guy.

To clarify, PEDs don't magically give you muscles and the effect is not so great that you can just take some and then be an elite athlete. It turns out the effect is relatively small and also that not everyone responds to them - i.e. you need to be genetically gifted for responding well to steroids also.

It's just that a "relatively small" performance enhancement of like 10% is a colossal difference at that level.

The issue becomes more nuanced when you have this situation: say you're a gifted athlete, you do everything right, you nail your training, nutrition, you really want the success...but every single one of your peers has all of those qualities AND they are taking gear that gives them 10% over you...you don't stand a chance.

Check out Clarence Kennedy. The guy basically turned his back on the formal sport because he didn't agree with all of this stuff and didn't want to lie about using gear, AND his country (ireland) lacked the funding to overcome any of it anyway.

So now he just lifts in his church basement and uploads videos of it,putting up literal world class numbers for youtube. It's wild. Like if Ussain Bolt never went pro and just did sub 10 second runs in walmart shorts on a deserted track.

For clarification, I don't use any PEDs, but I am a fan of the sport and gear is one of the commonly used nicknames for it. Along with juice, cycle, stack, trenbalony sandwich, etc.

I feel like you're focusing on all the wrong things here tbh.

PEDs should be legal across all sports. Baseball, for example, was the most popular it's been post WW2 when everyone was juiced up. If people want to destroy their bodies, and in a lot of cases cut their careers short due to the issues they cause, just for a relatively tiny edge, let them.

It would sure make a lot of sports more fun. And I dare anyone to tell me that, for instance, the > * "C l e a n" * < (wink wink) UFC of today is more fun to watch than the juiced up monsters destroying each other of Pride back in the day.

The irony of the problem is that because sports don't want to be seen as encouraging PED use, they just allow it to continue illicitly, arguably in a far more dangerous way.

Exactly. If they openly allowed it, it could be administered by real doctors and monitored to make sure it's being done at safe levels. Instead it's being sold out the back door, and athletes are taking whatever doses they feel like. It just makes the problem even worse.

It's amusing how many people think most weightlifters are natural.

Every Russian athlete is doping.
