...during the opening act, and then it became and absolute Sam Raimi tour de force for nearly the remaining entirety. Wow. What an absolute accomplishment that movie was. For any Sam Raimi or Evil Dead fans, this movie is a must watch.

First act was a banger, all of them were

2 big cgi monster battles, wanda revealing herself to strange might be the best scene and then the attack on kamar taj

Yeah, the dream sequence sucked, the NYC monster attack was okay (pretty much an extended Spiderman 2 reference), then the attack on the temple was just a boring Marvel light show completely lacking in inventiveness. But as soon as Wanda gets inside, Raimi shows his hand and the film finally becomes its own thing.

I just wish there was more universe-hopping. I'd bet there was some of that in the 40mins of cut footage.

*Spoilers*

Nah, opening fight was only slightly better than the usual MCU "mook fight" fare. It set-up the stakes but it didn't do anything interesting and the audience has no reason to care about the "villain" or America Chavez. The Scarlet Witch scene was fine, it's a good twist but that's it, otherwise the dialogue is pretty ordinary. The siege of Armitage was well-put together but the first great shot in the entire movie wasn't until Scarlet Witch uses the reflections to get out of that trap and overwhelms them.

Teleport to a new dimension then America's actress cannot hold up with Benedict in these scenes and it shows. Mildly interesting multiverse shenanigans and the second great shot of the movie when Strange and America get poisoned. Classic Raimi visuals. More standard MCU dialogue about how Strange and Christine would never work out, which setups better stuff later but it's nothing interesting here. Illuminati is kind of fun in a "Oh look, I know those guys!" way and Dr. Stranges fucking stuff up is good storytelling, and THEN... THEN the good stuff starts.

Scarlet Witch Dreamwalks into the Illuminati base, caves in Black Bolts skull, shreds Mr. Fantastic, bisects Captain America, and crushes Captain Marvel. It's a runaway freight train from this point on. Horror elements, pulp fantasy, B movie camera techniques with a big budget, Sam Raimi just throws the kitchen sink from here until nearly the very end and it's phenomenal.
