Did they have to start with the standard sized DVDs and cut them?

that would be a huge waste of materials. They likely just had them pressed at that size to begin with

They had a team of cutters, IIRC. My cousin worked as one, they did it by hand ~ it took each disc an hour of their time to be made.
It's why Gamecube games were more expensive.

Jesus Christ people, they didn't fucking cut the discs. What an asinine response. All you have to do is stick a regular disc in the oven for like 15 minutes and it'll shrink down. Didn't you guys ever do shrinky dinks when you were a kid? Society is fucked if this is how people think these days.

I'm sorry, but 10,000 of ANYTHING on a PS2 would absolutely destroy your framerate. It'd be like playing chess through the mail. ~johnboy1

Probably because of Nintendo's obsession with being different, no matter the cost or toll.

It was based on the mini DVD format which didn't really gain a lot of widespread use outside the GC.

Not many people probably have them anymore but you might've noticed at one point how a DVD drive's tray can have two tiers/circles. The small circle is the space meant for mini-DVDs.

IIRC they went with them over normal DVDs to make it harder to pirate games.

Pretty sure they were still $50-60.

It was moreso an attempt to curb piracy.

Yep. GCN games were still $50, just like PS2 and Xbox games.

A shame they went with those gimmick discs. If they had used normal DVDs the Gamecube could've probably taken or at least challenged the PS2. It was a powerful system for the time and it doesn't get enough credit. RE4 had much better graphics and lighting than the PS2 port for example.

The bizarre burst-cutting-area ended up being more effective than the size anyway.
Burners couldn't do that the time, and most of them still can't.

Interesting how Gamecube piracy protection turned out to be one of the most worthless of any disc-based console.

I'm pretty sure he meant "more expensive to make". Which was true, Nintendo was paying a bigger cost making gamecube's than microsoft and sony's Xbox and PS2 in general. On top of them being much bigger than Nintendo, they had a larger buying power which allowed to bargain down parts. They still were hitting the red selling Xbox's and PS2's consoles, so only imagine it being worst for Nintendo on top of GC discs costing more to produce than regular dvd discs.

Are people believing what that poster said about cutting it by hand? Lmao.

They were made that way and they weren't more expensive. Like, they used to give out mini AOL discs for free and RW versions existed in bulk.
