That movie would have been indescribable.

I probably won't see this movie, but that's more because I can't handle horror than anything to do with the content.

Horror movies aren't made for the masses.

Plus the writer/director is gay, so it's at least coming from that perspective on it, so who cares if "half the people" have a problem with a story being told from a LGBTQ perspective on principle?

Edit: to be clear, if this is a Blum House movie then I'm not expecting anything other than a bottom of the barrel slasher film themed like this for no reason other than cheap exploitation.

I do feel that there's a very negative gut reaction whenever LGBT themes are used in more creative projects and aren't just done with a Oscar bait style straight and depthless narrative structure, and I fear it can end up hurting LGBT integration into artistic mainstream media.

Which is not to say that this will be high art or anything.

The vast majority of their movies are crap though. Having one or two blumhouse movies win an award doesn't really offset the fact that the other 148 of them are straight to VHS tier garbage.

According to wikipedia, the writer that you're highlighting as having multiple nominations will also be making this movie his directorial debut, so at the very least the movie is dealing with a director who's never directed a movie before coming from a studio that's known for pushing out terrible movies.

And yes, he was a screenwriter on gladiator, but he was also the screenwriter on Sinbad and Star Trek Nemesis so it's not like he has consistent history.

Edit: it's also straight to peacock, so this isn't likely to be one of their movies where they put in the kind of effort you would need for a theatrical release.
