I start them and never finish them.

There is so much do in these kinds of games that it leaves me feeling paralyzed lol. I think that's why I never finish them.

I think I had more patience with them when I was in my teens, but now that I'm in my late twenties, I gravitate towards more linear games.

I feel the opposite

I get bored of them because there ISN'T anything interesting to do

Not even Elden Ring got me to like open world and just made me hate them even more

If I'm doing everything, I usually just go from point to point to point, so it can be fun slowly clearing out the map. Though if I don't care about the side stuff, I've started ignoring things like collectables and just bouncing through the main story.

Donkey Kong 64 was the best of that genre.

I can't do single player linear games anymore. Too formulaic and predictable.

Nah, I'm comfortable with them. Having multiple things to do at the moment keeps me from getting bored in single sittings

For me the difference between an engaging open world and a boring one comes down to consequence. If your open world is just a giant scattered series of disconnected chores and tiny quests that don't change the world in any meaningful way, then I'm going to quickly find it boring.

Little things like in The Witcher 3 where side quests will resolve with a bad ending if you don't take them, or roving NPCs in Elden ring that make you feel like they're also going on their own adventure, really bring those types of games to life, though.

The industry is inundated with them.

Every game doesn't need to be open world, nor do all battle systems need to be action based. Variety is the spice of life.

Yeah, like Elden Ring is difficult for me to get into because of it's open world.

depends on the style of open world game.

Like GTA is still wildly easy to follow due to missions, etc. You can just stay on the main storyline.

And on the flipside, Elden Ring, which literally tells you nothing.

Not so much paralyzed by them, but I do get bored with them after a while. Maybe Im showing my age, but I prefer like a good structured story to just wandering around doing task after task.

Thats my biggest disappointment with the new Lego Skywalker Saga- they put way too much focus on the free-roam stuff and the story levels are so short (I feel like even most of the story takes place in free-roam).

Its still fun doing the open world stuff but I would have much rather had longer story levels.

But I guess open world stuff is in right now so \_()_/

The only open worlds I felt were well designed are BotW and Elden. Every other game its just scenery from point A to B.

I dunno. BOTW's "solution" seems to be just using the entire alphabet, five times.
Rather than an empty world, it's somehow packed full of irrelevance and tedium simultaneously.

Oh, and it's raining again.

this happens to me but with jrpgs, don't really have the time or energy anymore to do repetitive grinding and sit through 45 minute cutscenes

I often do at first. If I'm able to get into them, that changes. Skyrim overwhemled me the first time. Now every time I make a new character, I have an exploration strategy, I never need to use the carriage travel system and quite frankly, I kinda wish the world was bigger >_>

Exploration is among my favorite aspects in games so I actually tend to like them. I like having a big world where I can just chill and explore at my own pace. Skyrim, Starbound, GW2, and GI are all among my favorite games in part for that reason.

I generally dont like them because 9/10 theyre littered with filler and padding that amounts to little.

I loved Elden Ringhowever I am enjoying Demons Souls Remake much more. It feels more focused and cohesive. The Mining area Archstone alone is more fun than all of the recycled ER mines.

Idk I really just dont prefer the open world stuff. It feels like they sacrifice quality for quantity.

Normally no.

But I've found myself completely unable to get into the Elder Scrolls series.
