So forgive me. I am still learning. Is the whole distributed ledger side of things a fundamental property of blockchain or again just one of possibly a number of ways to facilitate blockchain? I thought fundamentally blockchain was all about the fact records are immutable. That's it. Could I not potentially implement a blockchain right now with the right tools that wouldn't be distributed? Would that not actually be a blockchain?

I don't know much about stable coins. Can you elaborate?

The tldr is that they are supposed to have hedge-like stability instead of the typical volatility you see. There are multiple different models, but the most logically consistent model is one that's backed by an actual currency. It's obviously more complicated than that, involving being currencies being "pegged" to dollar values, etc.

The idea is that you can put your money in a coin that will give a consistent interest rate, sort of like a hedge fund or even the bank account. Sort of a set-it-and-forget-it.

That's why the collapse of a stablecoin is far more concerning than just some random altcoin.

The other stablecoins are backed up with equally flimsy foundations.

One of the major reasons stablecoins exist is to provide a degree of financial stability to a market that technically has no intrinsic value.

One, what the fuck does that tweet mean?

And two, with the price of beef what is in that hot dog that it only costs $1.50 with a 20 oz drink?

Costco has been selling $1.50 hotdog combo since the 1980s despite inflation and has no plans on raising the price. It is basically a loss-leader for them.

And I know for a fact that it draws people into shopping at Costco because it does exactly that to me.

Just want to point out that crypto isn't technically a bubble. It's really more like a very prolonged Ponzi scheme, that will be perpetuated as long as there are buyers. The problem with such a scheme is that the moment liquidity is disrupted, it collapses. All the magical thinking and jargon in the world doesn't change the fact that even the stability of the blockchain itself depends on speculation. If a currency is devalued enough, it's no longer worth mining, which decreases liquidity, which causes a sell off.

The reason cryptocurrencies often have weird cult-like followings is because they need people willing to buy huge amounts of coins whenever the price drops, which promotes the false idea that buying low makes you fortune. It can, as long as you're not the last person in the scheme.

They never were and never will be remotely comparable. Cryptocurrency is 100% speculation, with literally no value behind it. It's not even valuable as a currency, let alone a commodity.

Stocks at least represent percentages of a company. Cryptocurrency only has value through pure speculation. That is, by definition, what a real Ponzi scheme is.

If you pull out of a Ponzi before it collapses, you're merely shifting the final devastating collapse to someone else. It's basically financial hot potato.

You're still not owning anything. If a coin is operated by a company that profits off the existence of a coin, and that coin gives you voting power based on percentage owned, it's effectively a stock but without intrinsic value.

You mean other than it's an immutable shared ledger system that requires complex calculations that become progressively more compute intensive as transactions occur?

It naturally evolved out of earlier torrent systems, but the key advantage being that the people facilitating the transactions are incentivized by doing so. The fundamental flaw with torrents being that everyone wants to download but nobody wants to upload. In a blockchain, being a part of the blockchain itself is rewarded.

It's actually very clever, however I disagree with how cryptocurrency uses a logarithmic compute requirement to mine more coins. It has created a compute arms race for a dwindling supply of new available currency.
