Ive had a few job opportunities that seemed very tempting that either ended up not working out or I turned down. Well now all their stocks are plummeting. They all offered much lower base salaries and pushed their equity as a selling point. My current company is privately owned and I get cash bonuses. Ive come out on top despite this market.

One company was a startup and offered me a much lower base and pushed hard on the fact that they expected to make bank when they IPOd. Well they did IPO and it lost 75% value by the time employees were allowed to sell their shares and the outlook is not looking good for some time. I also heard the team I was supposed to join was working 60-80 hours a week.

One company I was really excited about but then they had a new policy change and couldnt hire me remotely as they thought. I would have needed to relocate to the Bay Area. They just reached out again because thats changed now but I looked up their stocks and ouch. Thats what made me realize how lucky Ive been lol

Congrats, you fucked them all over. If you had joined one of them it would be your current company going down the tube while the one you joined would have prospered.

Not really because I dont get stock here and my bonuses have been great. My salary is not dependent on the whims of shareholders getting butthurt about not making as many billions as they hoped. A lot of big tech companies have been dangling their equity for some time as if its a done deal. The current market proves it can be a big gamble to take.

The moral of the story:

trust what is tangible, cash bonus now is greater than any promise of Stocks that will "Miraculously Rise" because of IPO.

Work Life Balance > any promises.

Yeah, it can go both ways. I have an acquaintance that got rich off of equity she was given as compensation. Now she views herself as an investment genius lol.

I talked to a candidate from Amazon yesterday. Their shares lost $1000 value in a month. I think its just a wake up call that its not real money until its in your pockets.

Yup. When I received an offer from my current company I also got an offer from a FAANG. The base they offered was $50k lower. When I tried to negotiate all they did was offer more equity. If I took their deal, Id be making about $80-100k less than I do now.
