Rome, Venice, Bologna, Milan, and so on? What about the countryside? I don't really get the boner people have for Italy. I mean, it was once a very influential and wonderful place, but I dunno about in the 21st century.

It's nothing like a basement. No air conditioning, plants everywhere, no Monster or G Fuel outside of the densest urban areas.. You can't even get your food fast because they make everything from fucking scratch. Grapes? Who the fuck cares about grapes.

It sucks. I wanna go back home, mom.

Find yourself a nice Nonna from Italy. Maybe she can show you around and cook-a-you some pasta.

Yes I've been to Italy many times. I have family that lives there. It's a wonderful place but you won't be able to see the good stuff without being able to speak Italian unless you have a guide. If you do go, I recommend visiting as many local festivals as you can. There are some big ones that are basically nationwide events that you can plan around although some festivals may really only be in one place despite nationwide attention.

Here's a pretty decent guide:

I like how the cities weren't build with cars in mind. The architecture is very beautiful and rustic feeling.

I try to go 2-3 times a year, easy to do since Italy is less than 3 hours by car from where I live (Zurich, Switzerland). It's my go-to place for when I go motorcycling. Last year my brother, 2 friends, and I rode our bikes to Lake Como and the Dolomites (2 separate trips). After our trip to the Dolomites, I returned to Zurich and drove down the following day with my wife and 2 kids to Albenga, which is on the Ligurian coast (about an hour from the French border). Living this close means that even day trips are possible. My friend and I even rode our bikes over the alps and crossed the border for lunch and made it back home by 5pm.

The cities are amazing in their own right, but the countryside matches it easily. The countryside in Tuscany (google San Gimignano), for example, was one of the most beautiful places I've ever been to.

So yes, I can 100% confirm the hype around Italy. It's in my top 3 favorite countries. Italy is very relaxed (admittedly, also less organized) compared to Switzerland, not as clean (the bar is very high, of course), and has some of the best cuisine in the world. I highly recommend everyone tries to go some time in their life.

For the purposes of traveling, Italy's regions can basically be described as North, Central, South, and Sardegna.

North has lots of tourist shit but bad food.

Central has Rome / Vatican / really bad food because it's basically catered to tourists.

South has great food and beaches but not much for tourists.

Sardegna has maggot cheese.

Places to check out in the north: Milan, Venice, Florence.

Places to check out in Rome: Vatican, colosseum

Places to check out in the south: Napoli, Capri, Sorrento, Sicily

Places to check out in Sardegna: the exit

Literally everything is closed for lunch except restaurants. Don't plan your day around doing shit like shopping at 1pm because you won't be able to.

Ive been to Florence, Pisa, Venice, Milan & Rome.

Out of those I probably liked Florence the most. Its just a very intimate city in general.
Pisa is a literal ghost town outside of its famous landmark, Venice while beautiful probably wont last very long as well and I noticed the water was especially stinky.

I enjoyed these places much more than Paris, however.

I have been to Milan and Florence. Milan was okay, not sure I would visit it without visiting any other cities tho.

Florence was legitimately one of the most beautiful places I have ever been. Very small, you have to walk to get anywhere, so much art and culture, it was great. A must visit.

Only thing I actually did not like was the Uffizi, the Pitti Palace and the gardens behind it are great.
