And why shutting it down has no impact on the price of gas today. Getting tired of hearing people bring it up when whining about gas prices but don't know enough about it to know how to respond to it

First of all, it wasn't even close to being built yet, so no. It would have no impact on gas prices today, as to start off it wouldn't even be finished yet.

Second, it was to transport Canadian petroleum to American refineries to sell overseas. It would have no impact on domestic gas prices, as the intention was not to sell the product here.

Irregardless, for all intensive purposes, I could care less.

"XL" was going to be a straighter route, and bigger pipes.

Not a whole hell of a lot of effect on gas prices, because Albera's oilsands are a butt to refine, and there's an existing pipeline already there anyway.

The XL pipeline (ie. the one you are referring to) is an unfinished pipeline that was going to transport an extremely caustic form of crude oil across the US from Canada for processing. The reason that oil prices will be unaffected is because it was never finished and thus has never been relevant economically beyond the kickbacks paid to politicians.

Okay thank you both. So it wasn't even American oil. We just refine it and it was sent to other countries

This. IIRC, Trump re-approved permits for it very soon after taking office, and it still made next to no progress during his term because it wasn't clear it'd even be worth it financially, on top of the other legal hurdles it still had to face (like, you know, trying to take land away from American citizens).

Oilsands only become market viable when the other oil costs too much. When oil is cheap, oilsands are a waste of time.

This, and it was basically just going to be a shortcut for already-existing lines. Increasing capacity, yes, but not like it was opening up a whole new avenue.
That isn't true at all. The current pipeline isn't equipped to handle the oilsand at all and would require massive amounts of renovation if they didn't want it to immediately eat through the lines. The reason it's more direct is because the material is hazardous and Canada doesn't want it in their land as much as possible + it is cheaper to do a direct path regardless of how much farmland it goes through.

Is there a pipeline anywhere that can actually transport this stuff?

Major instances of it? No. Literally some? I'm sure that there are some minor instances of it somewhere. It's just that it's hard to really confirm any because searching for it in English just gets me a bunch of XL stuff even when I'm looking at stuff not even in the Americas. I want to say that there are some in Russia (guess what the other thing I'm getting is when I search...) but I can't confirm it.

As mentioned it's extremely unprofitable versus just doing normal oil stuffs so basically nowhere wants anything to do with it. It's just that America has a party that is more concerned at being a supervillain than anything else so it came down from divine mandate that we would process it for the (sort of literally) pennies that would be made after all of the extreme costs of processing + moving the stuff happened.

It's not really a popular thing to talk about as it causes the entire thing to come across as utterly petty. That because the oil companies are so unwilling to do maintenance on their pipelines they have no real ability to transport the tar sands using the existing lines.
