that's what i like about dark souls, you can go anywhere and the dangers seem the same

other rpgs that claim to be open world but has level restraints on different areas that make enemies either impossible to kill or irrelevant

It just makes me laugh. Here I am with a level 15 man serpent greatsword, strength fully maxed out, decked out in black iron armour. And I still get ganked by those stupid fucking skeleton wheel dudes

I played a modded Oblivion once (FCOM) that handled this really well and I've yet to see it well replicated in a game since. The idea was that everywhere was accessible, but as you get further from the path the levels go up. And still you can go into dungeons far off the map and the enemies aren't super crazy, but with each level into a dungeon you go the enemies become rarer and scarier, as does the loot.

It's a simple concept but it made exploring really exciting. You know that the deeper into a cave you go the worse it gets.

Elden Ring is my first Souls game and I also like that even though I've far surpassed them in power, I can still get my shit kicked in by some random dude in Limgrave if I don't pay attention.

i really thought that i was supposed to lock in on enemies when i first started dark souls, once i stopped doing that i was free to run around the enemy for the backstab and positioning is key for a lot of fights, yeah those wheel guys are annoying even if you're whittling down their numbers, one could easily kill you decide to heal or forget that there's another one behind you

sometimes you gotta run around the enemies instead of taking the hits while waiting for your turn to attack

yea, the bonewheel skeletons can beat pain.

they're easily my least favorite enemies in the first game...after the basilisks.

Pinwheels are not low level skeletons.

They are the absolute highest level of megachad a skeleton can possibly be. Never let your guard down around them. Ever.
