I'm not saying there needs to be a prohibition on alcohol (we all know how that turned out the first time). I just wish the media would stop glamorizing it. There's no such thing as "moderate drinking." Alcohol is a carcinogen to your body just like tobacco. I wish a big movement would start to put a heavy stigma on alcohol the same way there is for tobacco. Big Alcohol (there is such a thing) has been lying to the public for a long time just like how Big Tobacco has. If you Google "Big Alcohol" you can find out the truth about Big Alcohol and their lies, but there needs to be a much bigger push to get this information out to the public (like a huge ad campaign similar to how "Truth" did for Big Tobacco).

I'm not gonna sit here and tell people they shouldn't drink alcohol. I'm just saying that I wish all of the facts about what alcohol does to your body was out there in the open in all forms of media so that everyone can see how Big Alcohol has lied to them.

Alcohol is one of the few acceptable vices in most places

It's the same with coffee. They're not comparable but they're seen as a vice that is encouraged
A lot of it stems from pubs still being seen as a 'local' place to gather away from kids.

Can someone explain to me how alcoholism is genetic and not just like everything else? Obviously if your parents are heavy drinkers, that's gonna influence you. But that's everything. What's the genetic part?

I mean humans were never meant to consume fermented fruit/ethanol...

I dislike how understated the "minor" negative effects are. The big stuff like DUI/Drunk driving accidents and domestic abuse rightfully get the most attention but it creates this false sense of security where if you didn't do something obviously and undeniably life ruining, you were drinking responsibly. The unnecessary shit you learn to live with putting yourself through just so you can get drunk doesn't start with the serious things but nobody, myself included, ever seems to notice or care about that progression. It's baffling.

I just don't get it. Cause given that it seems completely "random" if the seed of an addict becomes an addict or not, how is it proven? I put random in quotations because nothing is random and it's because of millions of other factors. But, how can you seperate what's influence and what's genetic? Especially when influence is the way more powerful thing in a youths life.

It's one of those unspoken things of society where we all have seen the damage it can do to people but people don't want to be lectured about it either. Dunno what the solution is.

It's funny when people get all uptight and in denial. Cause if you admit the person isn't wrong but you're still gonna do it anyway for whatever reason you give, they still respect the self awareness more than they'd respect you not being able to face reality along with the problem.

Iirc, they've narrowed the addiction gene down. Offspring of an alcoholic has a 50% chance of getting the gene.

The gene is more of an indicator of potential than a guarantee. It's been shown that many people with the gene do not end up being addicts, but there is a strong relationship between being an addict and childhood trauma. Sadly some families have a domino effect, because an addict parent can cause trauma when experiencing addiction
