When the pinpad screen prompts you to donate, I don't need to hear any stupid excuses about why you're not donating. I don't care. I don't give a fuck. I'm not going to look down on you, or judge you for not donating. Just select "no" and spare me your excuses. Saying stuff like, "Oh, I've already donated", or "I donate enough" isn't somehow making you save face, it's making you look weaker. Just tap "no" on the fucking screen and let's move on.

There shouldn't be any comment about it because the very point of it being called a donation is that there's no entitlement to it. No reason has to be provided for the lack of one at all.

Because, back in the day. It was FREE.

When I first started going to those huge shopping malls, when stuff wouldn't scan, they'd call the team leader who saw the queue of people behind, and would often just put it through for free.

I'm there to shop, not donate. You go ahead and hit no and don't ask me in the first place.

Also PSA: if you get asked to donate, ask whether the corporation matches the customer's donation, most of the time they're just donating your money with their name on it for tax breaks

This almost never happens, and it's not that bad. I don't mind that.

You know what sets me off instantly, though? If a customer starts coming up to the counter at the same time you're about to walk away, so you turn around and walk back to the register. Then when the customer gets up there, they say, "Thought you were gonna get away, huh?" That condescending bullshit shows complete disrespect and disregard for me. And it figures it's always older customers that end up saying it. I'll take a million "I guess it's free" than "Almost got away, didn't you?" I actually ended up asking one of those customers, "Where was I going?" and he was like, "I dunno." Then they the fuck are you saying it?

A few years ago, I had some lady ask where her cash back was. I was like, "What are you talking about?" and she was like, "There was an option for cash back, and I picked $5." No, you made a donation. Debit cash back isn't going to have an option for $1, which there was on that donation screen you mistook for a cash back option. She ended up asking a manager if it was possible to get her money back, but no, we couldn't undo the donation.

Because people making those excuses think I care, or have some judgments about them not donating. I only start judging them when they utter any excuse like that for not donating. They think I'm looking down on them, or disliking them for not donating. I don't care, all you have to do push the "no" option, and you can do that without saying a word.

The stores expect us to think you care (and it works). You are nothing more than collateral damage. Don't take it personally that we are forced to tell you. It's your store's fault. Not the customer.

The way I see it, if I want to donate, I will donate. I will never, ever do it through a store who can write it off on their taxes or whatever benefits they take from it.

Working in a retail store that matched prices was so annoying. It slowed down the lines cause dumbass customers thought you would take them at their word
