For those who are married, how much did you spend on an engagement ring? Im starting to shop around but for something nice but I would prefer not getting ripped off by some jeweler. Im also not sure about what kind of margins jewelers have to try and negotiate a fair price. Any tips would be appreciated.

Your best bet is to look online, pawnshops, and for sales. You can get really good rings for cheap if you put in the work.

We had been married for about 6 months before either of us even got a ring because my wife didn't want to spend a lot of money on jewelry and she just looked everywhere. She bought herself a fairly modest engagement/wedding ring set for like a couple hundred dollars.

Don't actually spend three months salary, that was always just a marketing gimmick

The ring is valued at roughly 3,000, but it was my late mother's that was passed down to me, so I didn't actually spend that.

I fucking hate wedding rings, shit started off as a marketing tool that eventually festered into our culture and society.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N5kWu1ifBGU&ab_channel=CollegeHumor

I did eventually get a ring, but one without diamonds on top because my wife and I are simple people. We rather spend money on our honey moon than on a stupid thing.

We got mine from bluenile. You can shop around for the diamond based on your budget and pick the setting. I picked the setting and my husband picked the diamond based on my preference of shape (round) and picked how much he wanted to pay, color,
clarity, etc

I was lucky to get married to someone that grew up outside the US so she didnt expect a crazy ring and doesnt feel the need to show off jewelry. I spent a bit more than a thousand and got something that looked nice but was cheap. She barely wears it.

Yeah my friend's family were the smart one and used a "hand me down" ring that was valued at $5000's from his mom. Then they he will give it to his child and so on.

I think I spent $100. You should at least have an idea what kind of ring your fiance wants, and if price matters to her.

I spent 3600. My wife hates jewelry. Never wears it. She said she hates yellow gold and traditional diamonds. I had her help with her ring. It was white gold with a black diamond. She loves it. Her band looks similar with 3 smaller black diamonds. There is nothing wrong with getting her input. We had talked about marriage quite a lot before I popped the question

If your girl isn't materialistic, you could always do a precious stone, or even cubic zirconia.

When I proposed, to my now ex, I got a ring with white cubic zirconia and she loved it. Showed it off for weeks and no one could tell it wasn't a diamond lol.

Lol marriage is such a sham I'm surprised people keep falling for it. It's a shitty old tradition that's designed to rip you out of your money. It makes literally no difference whether you decide to live with your partner even if you don't "marry" them. Just do a court thing no need for all that bs

I spent like $2k
Main stone is like 1/2ct and everything else combined is another 1/2. I went with a few female friends to help me pick it out at a local jeweler. They did a really good job of helping me keep my wife's tastes in consideration but also have it be something that I like. My wife didn't want to put any work into the choice so she preferred that I choose. She's terribly indecisive on stuff like this.

I avoided this by not getting married and just living as if we were married (without the expensive ceremonies and rings etc) instead.

Also means that if things go bad, I'm not stuck. Well, not as stuck anyway.

Been a while here.. (17-18 years)

I got it from BlueNile.com

Think I paid like 2k for it? I honestly cant really remember. But I liked how I was able to customize everything. Not sure if they are still around or not but Im sure the online ring/diamond market has advanced quite a bit from when I did it.

Id be afraid to buy something that expensive. I wouldnt want it getting lost or someone looking to steal it. Not worth losing a finger over.
