What about a rule like this in the future:

Before the contest even begins, I'll do an RNG selection of particular tiles in a puzzle (probably 1-2 per puzzle) and then RNG again to figure out an effect they have. Things like double points, triple points, etc. I thought about some feelbad options (like bankruptcy or lose half your points, etc.) but maybe that wouldn't be that fun. Well...maybe a "blue shell" option that takes away X points from the leader could be fun after this contest. :P

How did the first/other contests go? I was kind of wondering but I thought it might come off as some kind of veiled gloating.

Most of the other contests were fine. If I run the contest again, I'd probably leave a couple older puzzles still active so people can pick over them and get some points (probably double points) and not feel too left out.

Definitely want to be tagged for future contests. As seen here, I am pretty useless for 2000s+ trivia, so Ive sucked at this one, but maybe better luck next time

Do players prefer these contests to be themed or just have a mishmash of all games from all eras? So, instead of running one contest for 90s trivia and another for 2000s, just smush it all into one monstrosity?

Punch-Out is incorrect.

I figured that doing some puzzles in the morning would make participation a bit uneven, but after leaving a puzzle up all night, I kinda wanted something new on the table.

What if a correct answer could cause another player to lose a point rather than give yourself one? It's at the very least preferable to getting one right and losing points because of it.
You copy paste your "take points away from (insert name) if these are right" then throw in your guesses.
Edit: Maybe instead of giving yourself a good score you could try to give someone else a negative number for a score. Also if a new player shows up, they don't have to be deterred by the idea of making the climb and leave, they could participate and just mess with people.

Maybe a rule to stop people from trying to guess the answer (which Ive been guilty of plenty of times) would be to give someone -1 for a wrong answer? Reward someone for knowing the answer, and add a hint of risk to maybe knowing the answer.

And to limit the risk, we could have our scores locked in at the end of the round. So lets say after round 1, I have 3 points. I can try to guess the answer in round 2, but I cannot fall below 3 points. Thats my floor. And if I have a higher score at the end of round 2, then thats my new locked-in score.

I thought about that -1 for an incorrect guess thing but I feel like it'd slow the game down even more. Some tiles would go from difficult to 'I'm not going near that thing it's going to take all my points away.'

Maybe some sort of team element. If a new player shows up they could still greatly contribute to a team's score even if it's too late for their solo score to catch up.

Edit: Oh I've got one. Bingo rules. Every time a line's completed everyone who participated in it gets a boost. Middle picture should always be the most difficult. It's gotta be Gulman or an obscure Shmup or something.

Was the game even slow to begin with? I feel like Id log in during my break at work or at the end of the day, and Id missed 2-4 rounds during the week. We did 30+ rounds in less than a week. It felt like the entire game flew by.

I considered having the scoring changing, making it X+Y instead of just a total. X would be the permanent "banked" score while "Y" is the temporary score. So, if you had 10+20, you'd still have 30 points, but the "Y" value could be subject to RNG penalties (if I decided to do that) or player-initiated penalties (like "remove your Y score to halve someone else's Y score"). You could also have RNG bonuses like "the Y score of whoever answers this clue is banked immediately" or something. I also considered RNG bonus thievery, i.e. "the next bonus someone earns this round is given to you instead".

Bingo rules are something I considered in the past, but it wasn't feasible since I had 50 active puzzles at one time. If I kept the current format without having old puzzles around, I'd probably consider that. Scorekeeping would be harder, but it wouldn't be nightmare difficulty.

Still, if things are too complicated, it'll probably have an adverse impact on the participation.

In previous topics, I'd wait a few hours before doing a new quiz, but I kinda sped up the timetable for this one. It wouldn't be as noticeable if I did my album cover game, since that has at least 50 puzzles.

By the way, here are some of the RNG bonuses I was considering:

  • clue gives double points
  • clue gives triple points
  • players in last place get +X bonus if they give a correct answer this round
  • player gets bonus points for answering an entire column or row
  • all players gain X points (or Y points in X+Y format)
  • if you start round tied with someone (min score: 1), you gain points whenever they gain points
  • a particular tile, and all surrounding tiles, give a point bonus

Some penalties I could consider:

  • player loses X points (or Y points in X+Y scoring format)
  • player can't get bonus points this round
  • player in first place is penalized somehow ("blue shell" rule)
  • player loses all points ("bankruptcy" penalty; probably too harsh to include, honestly)
  • all players lose X points if the round isn't fully completed (also a little harsh)
