GOP only had power for a couple years and were able to pack the Supreme Court and get abortion banned. But Dems cant even cancel student debt, universal healthcare or free community college.

The senate creates the rules that determines how the senate works. One of those rules lets any senator basically veto a bill and 60 other senators are needed to override that. Used to be that the senate had a thing where a Senator could get up and talk for hours until the senate either got tired and voted to shelve the currently being discussed bill, vote to make the senator shut the fuck up, or the talking senator gave up. Then at one point the senate got tired of folks talking and just decided to skip that step and just decide to either shelve the bill or figuratively make the senator shut the fuck up. This made that action no longer have a cost and so as time moved on, it became more and more common for folks to use it. Now the senate is incapable of passing almost anything without 60 yes votes.

They don't have a majority, last I checked it was split 50/50 and votes need a 60 majority to pass, which the GOP will not give any law that will help us. People really need to understand that this isn't a super majority Democrat blow out in 2020. You want this shit to change? Go vote more and give one party the super majority and they will then be able to pass what you want. Last time that happened was for Obamacare.

The filibuster means that you need 60 votes to pass something, not just 50.

Now, with 50, you could remove the filibuster, but manchin and Senema don't want it removed

same thing I responded to you on the politics board

this shit doesnt work, because there are extremely few senate seats that are functionally possible to change

so you have a state like california with 40 million people that will always give two blue votes, and a state like Wyoming with 500,000 that will always give two red votes

get out and vote does not help for the majority of the country, we are stuck under minority rule literally by design

We don't have an actual majority. No matter how many times people think that Democrats are just gleeful in their floundering, it always comes down to having the courts stacked against them and a lack of actual membership in Congress --- the media doesn't report on the victories, just the negative reaction to any possible progress.

If they wrote a law protecting abortion (how would it get passed with the makeup of the Congress?), it would just be challenged and struck down by this Court, exactly like the Voting Rights Act was.

If you're asking why we aren't just passing hundreds of Executive Orders, it's because actual progress would require real legislation, not just fiats that can be overturned by the next Republican in office.

Your vote absolutely matters, on the local levels at least. But that's where the roots begin, where the seeds of future politicians are planted. There's no short term solution, but long term there is if we the people vetted our local politicians better.

Also I don't get the argument that population should matter for senate seats, and your example works inversely. Texas will also always get 2 red while Hawaii will always get 2 blue.

To be clear on the Supreme Court, Republicans were able to pack it because they had the simple majority in the Senate when Scalia died and when Ginsburg died. Trump was president and Mitch controlled the Senate with a Republican majority at an exceptionally favorable time which can't be replicated unless you can find a way to induce early death in a few of the older SC judges right now.

Republicans also had the majority when Kennedy retired and could replace him with a younger conservative judge, but the same kind of thing goes for Biden replacing Breyers' more recent seat with the younger judge Jackson. The important takeaway is how powerful the executive branch's ability to nominate SC judges is, and in 2016 and even 2020 I think this was consistently understated by disillusioned voters who weren't understanding how monumental Trump winning the election could be

We shouldn't be treating this as fact; it's nowhere to be found in the Constitution, was not the case for the first two centuries of this government, and can be undone with 50 votes willing to do it.

While true, it still won't happen unless either the Dems add at least two seats this year or Republicans retake majority

That's how it literally works. I get why you are upset about it, but that was designed to stop the majority from ruling with tyranny over the minority. How would you feel if this was reversed, and the republicans had all this power to rule as they like? Probably not good.

It is done this way to create concession, compromise and debate. The idea being that it is for the betterment of the country. I agree it is being abused heavily in the past 30 years, but it was working well prior. It is designed this way and works, but not when people are attempting to abuse it as they have been (filibuster changes, a complete lack of debate or actually voting on bills).

Be extremely fucking weary with what you wish for, because the pendulum is going to swing back and you might not like the precedents that have been set.

And now we can't just fucking wish a change into existence. It's how our government is. So, go vote, make sure everyone you know votes, and get the local governments set up way better than they are now.

Wanting change directly and right now is not ever happening. Ever. UNLESS we get a supermajority. Hence get the fucking vote out.
