It's depressing
just let me make 80k for no after hours work or constant 'learning' when you're not at work

My wife makes well over 100k, but works nearly 80 hours a week. I make like 70k on a good year and put in a solid 30.

Seems to be just how the cookie crumbles in America.

It's the same in Ireland
'oh hey you wanna make 80 and be an IT Manager in a big global corporation? Of course on call is a thing! Yes you'll be attention out of hours meeting. Family? hahaha we're your family now!!!'

That only seems to work in places that actually have a rule of care tho
In a school or creche or something I'd believe it

In 'Dr. Stupid Fuck's Big Wide Business For Synergy' it translates as 'I will abuse you and you will be fired if you complain'

A friend of mine was making a 100k. And they required 80 hours. He went back down to 70K so he could have his two days off.

I'm making $110k, but I probably put in about 35 hours of actual work per week. It got to be horrible at my old job, though. I was making $89k and was constantly working 60 - 80 hour weeks after the company started rapidly expanding. I asked for a raise to $105k to make that somewhat more bearable. They said they "looked at the average for what my position makes" and gave me $94k.

I quit about 3 months later.

I do also have to work overnights here and there, though

Triggering? Sorry bout that. If we want money we have to sacrifice something. Sucks that it's our time but what other options do we have, TC?

I mean 70k in dollars is nothing compared to 70k in euro
Like in Ireland we still have free healthcare and a state pension

America gets more at the same level since health insurance

  • Health insurance
  • Sales taxes
  • Childcare costs

It's kinda amazing how we probably end up paying the same or more in taxes as countries in Europe, but we get the short end of the stick in multiple areas.

Childcare is fucked in Ireland
Like outside of maybe working in a creche with a discount, you're paying about 1,000 euro a month for something decent
Lady at the old school paid 2100 for her two kids

We still have sales tax, it's just introduced ni the price already

Not that I'm advocating for this, but once most employers give you a salary the idea that's it's based off a 40 hr work week goes out the window. You just do as much as they ask.

i make 72k right now and if i had to add up all the time im actually doing work, its maybe less than 10 a week. of course, im in the office for 8ish hours a day

but honestly, if i feel like i dont need to be here, i just leave.

i know my boss makes 90-100k and the director about 120-130k a year, but i think about the workload they have, and i honestly think im good at this spot.

once my wife starts working again, we can easily live comfortably in our area and still save for things. plus i have great benefits.

At my old job, it started when they were moving to the new corporate office. I was the only network engineer at the time. We had all the equipment ordered, but we had about a two week time frame to get all the equipment physically installed and configured. It was multiple 12 - 16 hour days/week.

Then they wanted to open the Canada office around the same time and I flat out said that would have to wait because I didn't have any willingness to do more than the 80 hour weeks I was already doing at the time.

Then it turned into constant 60 - 80 hour weeks because they kept wanting to open multiple stores and warehouses all around the same time. I was scrambling to get everything done that was critical and then having to push many projects back so much that I was months behind on some things. And that's on top of the typical "Hey, my laptop won't connect to wifi," or "Hey, we're having internet problems in the office," or outage troubleshooting, etc.

Easy (in law at least). You can essentially always be doing more. More prep, more learning, better drafting or doc review.

Also when you are new you cant bill some things that you need to do to learn to your clients so you may work 10-14 hours to bill 8 (needed to hit you required annual min) As you grow you get better and can bill closer to your time worked.

They have 3 network engineers now. The guy who took over my role immediately after I quit says he's still dealing with a lot of the same shit that made me want to quit.
