I'm not the biggest fan of the combat system itself, it feels kinda watered down and mashy. I dig it in the context of Dragon Ball, because button mashing fits the frantic feel of Dragon Ball, but as a fighting game I'm a bit leery - similar reaction to playing Smash Bros for the first time, though I wouldn't say FighterZ is at all comparable to Smash Bros. It's just a little weird is all.

I'm also weirded the fuck out by the decision to introduce gacha mechanics into the game. Like I'm about to talk about the content in a positive light, but locking it behind a gacha machine with the option of real world spending is just really weird and a little frustrating.

Otherwise? Fantastic game.

I'm playing it on Switch, and it looks and feels FANTASTIC. I love the arcade ladder system, I love the little overworld guys, I appreciate how they have online and offline lobbies. And the lobbies themselves, 3D hub worlds with a little character you can control and customise - I wasn't expecting that, and it adds production value in a weird way to a genre that relies a ton on menus. Like I'm just a little guy running around, I love it.

The story so far has been kinda mid - the story itself is silly which is fine, but the character voices aren't hitting 100% - but A) I'm not a ride or die Dragon Ball fan (I really liked the original series as a kid but didn't like Z back then) and the people voicing the characters are in their 50's and 60's now so I get it.

The level of singleplayer/offline content is fantastic value for money. The roster, both basegame and DLC, is fucking awesome - so many characters to choose from. The character interactions, even if I don't wholly get their context, feel expansive and fun. There's so much game here - it's not an incomplete, compromised mess or a shattered game released piecemeal to keep people begging for scraps, it's feature-packed and bursting at the seams with content.

And the Switch port, again, is fantastic. I don't know how it looks on other platforms, but this game feels incredibly fun to play and I have no doubt that this is a fantastic port.

FighterZ is everything an AAA video game should be. Fan-fucking-tastic.

It's the best Dragon Ball game we had in years that doesn't feel like a shovelware like Kakarot. I'll be honest, once you play the game on a higher level it stops being "button mashy" and really works your brain in overdrive thinking on what to do next. It's a better Marvel vs. Capcom game than MvCI.

The biggest thing is the Presentation, which is absolutely on point and people even made videos on how much research they did to make moves taken directly from the manga and anime, even down to the poses.

My biggest complaint is that the characters all look very samey, and it doesn't help that there are a lot of Goku and Vegeta variants (granted they all play differently) but I guess that's simply the problem of the source material than anything. I'm not a Dragon Ball fan at all, only liked it as a kid because of Nostalgia, but I can say for certain this game is absolutely a must by for people who either love Dragon ball series or love to play competitive fighters.

At least Japanese Devs are finally listening with games like GG Strive and KoF XV, it honestly took them way too long to implement it. You'll notice why I haven't praised DBFZ for its online modes, because they're garbage. Delay based netcode with no rollback feature should never be released for any future fighting games.

Oh yeah, fuck playing this online lmao. I would get my shit rocked instantly.

Like I love Guilty Gear, but in the sense that it whips my ass 20 ways from Sunday and it's frustrating and fun to just find a way to get past the next character. Like Accent Core+ is the only hard fighting game I actually enjoy for the challenge, the appeal of other games like Tekken and Mortal Kombat has always been the story modes and stuff. I'm not a competitive fighting game guy.

Like this is probably a normie opinion, but Tekken 5 is straight up one of my favorite fighting games of all time, and it's not for the high octane mind games and technical gameplay. It's for the presentation, the customisation and the story. Dragon Ball FighterZ isn't a Tekken game in any sense of the word, but the amount of polished content gives me that same robust feeling that Tekken 5 gave me as a kid.

I loved tekken 5 as well, MK Deception and Armageddon both had robust single player modes that kept me endlessly entertained too, probably my favorite single player fighters

You shouldn't have to button mash anyway because of the auto combos, which only makes playing online SLIGHTLY less painful at this point in its life.
