Personally I hate them and think they are a symptom of pure greed and milking the customer for every cent. It was best when it was just a video game and an expansion pack.

I don't buy them, but I have no problem with them existing

We need more, I think games should have more slow walking and listening to exposition as well.
I also don't want the games to work right away. Functionality should come in a patch after a few days.

As a consumer the expansion pack model was a better deal. For a game publisher though, selling 'season passes' up front and then having developers poop out a minimalist product produces the highest yield of short term profits. Given the opportunity though they'd love to drive microtransactions into things, and loot boxes, having people gamble away cash for the chance to earn some digital trinkets.

This. Locking weapons or gameplay features behind microtransactions (especially loot boxes where there's additional RNG involved) is bullshit.
