1) Spanish is WAY easier to learn for an English speaker

2) To be able to read stuff like manga. There is a ton with no/poor translations

3) Although likely not as useful in everyday life in most places in the world, fluency in Japan can be very lucrative with the right translation jobs. I know someone who as obtained native speaker level fluency of Japanese and he has a very nice translation job in Japan.

Literally huge media influence around the world. Their shows, music, Jpop, idols, influence in videogames and manga/anime.

Is it any wonder why lol

I disagree that Spanish is more useful around the world. it might be more useful in America specifically but that's it. Even if you don't watch that Naruto crap there's tons of extremely lucrative business opportunities you can get for being a Japanese interpreter that there's just no equivalents for in Spanish.

Spanish is only more useful around the world in a context of more countries speak it as their main language.

Seeing as how a number of people in this topic themselves have said it's for anime/manga and video games my point stands.

and if I were to learn a new language for hypothetical business purposes I still wouldn't pick Japanese. It would be Spanish or Mandarin. Even German or Hindi would come before Japanese in terms of business. Hell, Arabic would have more practicality.

Learning any new language is useful but unless you have a specific use for it Japanese is far down the list for practicality.

If you live in America learning Spanish is far more useful.
Even if you moved to Japan knowing perfect Japanese, the culture and your lack of being Japanese would make life horribly difficult and frustrating.

I guess the one benefit would being able to watch anime without needing to read the subs but then again it might awaken you to the fact that a lot of what they say is kinda cringe and no better then watching the english dub (other then the wider diversity of VAs in japanese language).

Japanese has far more career opportunities. Japan is home to some of the most powerful companies on the planet, such as Sony & Honda. The ability to operate as an expat in Japan could serve as the basis for powerful career building. Also, Japanese would include kanji, which would give me solid foothold of Chinese language. Spanish isn't nearly as useful in that regard, unless I wanted to enter the medical field.

Japanese. Me speaking it would be a nice surprise to my old hapa friends who are bilingual. They even wanted me to learn japanese so i can understand them half of the time since theyd switch between english and japanese with eachother. I found that aspect of them a bit annoying tbh.

Also would be cool to not have to wait for anime/manga/light novel translations

I was going to say Spanish, but it's apparently much easier to learn, so I'd probably go with Japanese. Plus if a game I'm playing has superior voice acting with the Japanese cast, I can play it with that instead of sticking to the English voice just so I don't have to read subtitles.
