I'm trying to find another anime to get into, but I'm not finding anything that has captivated me the same way Death Note did. Seems like literally every other anime is filled with that same slap-stick humor and characters that are exaggerated stereotypes. I've made my way to Hunter X Hunter and I'm about six or seven episodes in and it doesn't have me hooked yet. None of the main characters seem all that interesting. Gon feels like a 100% generic anime protagonist. I know the show is highly rated, so I imagine it must get better, but when does that happen?

I thought it gets pretty great during the Hunter exam, so pretty soon if you're not there already.

I was immediately hooked but you might not like it until later. it gets dark

It starts out decent, but the really good stuff hits when you start hearing about the Phantom Troupe. Then, a couple arcs later, the very best shit comes with the ants.

also the 1999 version's soundtrack is amazing

the best arcs in the anime are Yorknew City and Chimera Ant. you're a ways off from them.

also: you should watch the first episode of the 1999 anime, or read the first chapter of the manga, before watching the... what was it, 2011 anime? there was a character omitted in the first episode of the 2011 anime for some reason, and he's important later on

That is very intentional. I cant answer your question as I loved it from the start so all I can recommend is to keep watching.

If you arent at all into it by the end of Yorkknew you can probably drop it though.

If you like Death Note then you should watch Code Geass

Try Jojo, but don't worry about enjoying every single Part. They all kind of have different vibes going. Also give Dorohedoro a try.

As for Hunter x Hunter specifically, it gets good during the Hunter exam I'd say.

HxH is pretty good from the jump, but only gets real good at episode 39 (Yorknew City arc).

But after that arc ends, it's boring af until the end.

Just do yourself a favor, do not read the manga. The anime is far better overall, and actually bearable to get through. I liked bits and pieces of it, though Yorknew and Greed Island are my jam.

when you switch to yu yu hakusho, the author's vastly superior work

Death Note is literally just the same plot repeating ad nauseam. The beginning is good, but it gets boring.

Speaking from someone who was turned off by the same aspects you are in these opening episodes, it did not get better for me and I did eventually quit around Episode 65 when I just had enough. But I should have quit sooner. Death Note is my third favorite anime. So the others I would recommend if you like that would be Code Geass, Attack on Titan, and Steins Gate

Like a lot of people have said, the beginning of the Hunter Exam arc pulled me in. Yorknew ended up being the most epic part of the show for me. And then Chimera Ant was epic at times, a little sloggy at others (expected because it was long) but mostly solid (and super funny for the memes IMO). The other arcs were decent to disappointing for me. Overall I really liked it though.
