This will bomb tremendously with the general Diablo fanbase but the casual smartphone whales and Chinese market will eat this garbage up and Blizzard will make big money from that.

yes because mobile phones are the number one thing that enables gacha gaming. Gacha is considered gambling. people were mad at hail when EA tried to gacha up their games.

It matters cause you know they are going to focus more time and effort into the one that makes more money. Going after the gacha whales will make them a shit ton more money than a good game will.

There's on screen controls you can see. It might be like a mobile MMO where there's an auto mode but if you actually want to do anything meaningful you have to manually control it.

I'm more than willing to bet it's going to be like a lot of other mobile action games where you have a couple of abilities you use by pressing a button on the screen, and while there will probably be an auto battle feature, the hardest content will be designed so you have to play it manually.

Then the mobile game design creeps in and they start to release weekly and monthly events that are perfectly paired with new equipment or abilities in a gacha pool designed so that you need to get the latest and greatest thing to be able to beat the latest and greatest event.

So in order to regularly complete the newest content you need to regularly get the feature items in the gacha and they'll drip feed you just enough currency to be able to roll on each one but not enough to guarantee the items you need. This will quickly create a situation where in order to keep up with the treadmill and not miss out on limited and seasonal characters you have no choice but to buy currency packs.

The announcement just had all the wrong pieces in place which caused the big negative backlash. The fanbase is predominately PC players and everyone was expecting a D4 announcement and instead got an announcement for a mobile game that they know will freemium'd the fuck out of.

I hate the idea as someone who has seen and played enough gatcha games to know how disgustingly predatory they are. Maybe blizzard will come out and surprise everybody by making a real Diablo game on mobile that isnt a thinly veiled excuse to nickel and dime people, but I have no reason to believe that blizzard is that type of company anymore.

Out of curiosity, how many free to play mobile games with a gatcha system have you actually played?

How is this game not out yet?

You're not wrong... if Immortal was actually a port of d3 that did just allowed you to play the game.

But the hellscape that is mobile gaming makes that really fucking unlikely. I will wait to judge until it's out, but I'm not optimistic at all.

I'm pretty interested in trying this out tbh.

It's an assumption based on the developer (NetEase), interviews with game director, and how most f2p mobile games are monetized. It's not unreasonable to think that a game that is all about getting new items and weapons would have a gacha for items and weapons that guarantees some higher level of rarity than what you'd find naturally. So they'll say "everything you can get, you can find in-game" and then someone on reddit will do the math to show that you'll need to grind like 500 hours for a legendary drop that you can reliably get with a few 10-rolls on a gacha banner.

Here's the interview, BTW. It doesn't explicitly mention gacha, but you can see how the systems are designed in a way that would perfectly complement them.

Of course, the big question would be how Legendaries work. In Immortal, Legendary affixes will directly buff skills, meaning youll want to make sure youre using the right Legendaries for your build.

This works out thanks to the Reforge feature, taken from Diablo 3. Here, you can use your salvage to reroll affixes on your items, meaning youll be able to keep trying until that shiny new spear buffs the skills you want to use.

While rerolling can be dangerous, Diablo Immortal plans to help you make better bets with the use of Family Rune Stones. These will limit the number of skills you can pull from for your skills, meaning youll have a better chance of getting the affixes you want.

Of course, while playing the game is free, that doesnt mean the developers wont charge you for shortcuts. The previously mentioned Family Rune Stones are an example of this, where improving the odds of reforging is ultimately going to cost you if youre impatient.

Theres also the games Battle Pass, another staple of the free-to-play genre. Buying into the Battle Pass will get you various rewards, but only if youre diligent in completing everything the game has to offer. They hadnt mentioned pricing structures for these, but clearly theyve found a way to make sure to preserve the spirit of the game while still making sure the game has money coming in to support its planned updates.
