it might be, sort of like how some places make you pay for a uniform. but it's also making you do something outside of work hours... either way you can probably file the dinner as a work expense on next year's taxes and get some money back. --- the most ignored, most PG & family friendly, lowest selfesteem poster who also has a great body, and 3 time winner of the annual 'least replies award' on CE ... Just make up some excuse that you had a family emergency. Or just tell him you already had plans scheduled for that night and can't go. They aren't going to fire you. And if by some chance you do get fired make sure you go to a lawyer and the news media. A story running about that company about how the manager is forcing people to go to dinner with him after work and pay for it themselves? I wouldnt advise you to lie or make up any excuses. I would show up and not eat. Eat before you go. If he asks you why you arent eating, say I didnt plan for this meal and its out of my budget, but Im attending to make sure I get whatever information were going over. if he asks you to split the bill even though you arent eating, dont.
