Seems like this manga never shows its full hand, just when I think the author had finished their starting vision a chapter like this drops that feels like it recontextualizes every world-building detail up to now. I noticed Zenkichi's absence throughout the arc but thought he'd show up at the end somehow by working with outsiders like Shiranui or something. Got uncomfortable when the winning kick was scored and now the relationship that connects the reader to Medaka and grounds her as human is being questioned

I planned to watch Pretty Boy Detective club when I saw it announced but never got around to it. I don't know their other works.

They're all very good. If you're open to light novels I'd suggest you read the originals, otherwise the anime adaptations (that I've watched) are all great too

Once this arc is done and you see what the Flask Plan ackshually was the first couple of arcs are a lot more interesting. There are details you wouldn't catch unless you knew what Anshin'in was up to.

Why did you never finish that massive write up of the series you started years ago

The job I had at the time came with lots of downtime. It started as a project to make those days less of a drudge. If I remember right one of the topics got deleted for a stupid reason so I had to reassemble a bunch of it from web archives and drafts. That, along with having less free time, sapped my motivation.

Might be fun to revisit; I've had a number of people ask me to continue.

I thought this was about Megalo Box and immediately stopped caring once it wasn't.

I wonder if the page-long ability Zenkichi described (that was withheld from the reader) will actually be a significant element to the plot or if that was more of a gag

Medaka Box anime was such a weird mess. It has all the elements of superpowers the manga does but it doesn't go on long enough to ever explain what's really going on so people that watch the anime with no knowledge of it are left wondering wtf was going on

I dont think I posted this page in the thread when I first read it, but I'm curious if it will ever be used. Or maybe the implication is that they did use it to change Hinokage's power to Anthem? The manga has been going back and forth implying that Hansode is somehow the mastermind of everything, and now Zenkichi is gonna try to get the girl she hates to fall for him, and we get the page of Hansode declaring that unlike justice, it's alright for love to fail.

It comes back to everything.

I'm just going off of memory here but he set up the card game so that they'd get the same result regardless of whether they won or lost but that doesn't mean he didn't want to win.

The Jet Black Wedding arc is probably the most divisive one in the series. The whole thing is structured so that all of the familiar characters are trying out roles that don't really suit them and Nisio goes full Nisio by basing the powers around wordplay.

You will definitely get the most enjoyment out of this as a Japanese native speaker. A whole chapter is about decoding a riddle Medaka wrote by translating it through different Japanese scripts.

This one's more meta than previous arcs in the sense that they're facing up to the preserved legacy of some beloved older hero, one of their predecessors, a name that's so revered that supposedly nothing new can compare. Even trying to compare themselves to him through combat causes irreparable harm to their characters.

It's been a very long time since I've read it. I've forgotten nearly everything about it.
