For the most part anyone who feels strongly about their political opinions tend to be dogmatic and tribalist and generally just unpleasant to be around, though thats not to say everyone is like that. It takes a level of maturity to feel strongly about your political views and still keep a level-headedness and self-awareness that doesn't always happen with those who engage politics from a more tribalist basis.

Maybe we post the way we do because we have to be diplomatic irl to people whose views are reprehensible

if the goal is to have a better society than just mouthing off at someone like a bloodhound because we find their views reprehensible isn't necessarily the most effective counter to toxic ideology. It's a sad fact of life but we have to live alongside in a society of people who might have beliefs we personally find reprehensible, we can react angrily about it out of a sense of being justified and righteous, or we can approach it in a more collected manner and direct our energy in a more efficient way depending on what the issue in question is. It seems people who discuss politics online are more interested in expressing the righteous type of anger rather than the diplomacy thats generally exercised in real life to move forward, and theres nothing wrong with that, but ultimately it serves no useful purpose other than feeling the emotional rush of being able to exercise righteous anger over the people whose views are considered reprehensible. And for those who let's their fervor for expressing their righteous anger spill over from online into real life, then those people are generally considered unpleasant to be around even amongst people who might agree with their views but finds their attitude unlikeable.
