I can't imagine buying a phone that is so fragile and so much of my salary that just ruining it's cosmetics causes me to have a total breakdown in the office.

Literally 2 weeks ago we ended up arguing over this topic. She was trying to tell me why her purchase made sense. I was telling her why I buy last gen's refurbished models.

I'm not gonna rub it in to her face right now because she really is upset, but man...maybe don't buy things you can't afford to lose...

Part of me is astounded at how Apple has managed to fool people into thinking they need to spend almost an entire month's wage on a device that they never own and can't repair and that barely provides any meaningful purpose beyond what a $300 device could do.

• iOS devices more often than not retain a pretty high value, even older devices with minor damage
• iOS devices have insanely long shelf lives compared to Android devices. There are devices hitting a decade old that are still supported in some fashion, and every iOS device gets major updates all at the same time
• iOS versions of virtually every single major app + game generally perform much better and get quicker updates than their Android counterparts
• iMessage is beyond lightyears ahead of Google's neverending stream of failed messaging services

Nobody should be buying $1,000 smartphones to begin with, and the average person would be 100% fine with sub-$500 devices. That being said, let me explain the obvious.

* iOS devices more often than not retain a pretty high value, even older devices with minor damage
* iOS devices have insanely long shelf lives compared to Android devices. There are devices hitting a decade old that are still supported in some fashion, and every iOS device gets major updates all at the same time
* iOS versions of virtually every single major app + game generally perform much better and get quicker updates than their Android counterparts
* iMessage is beyond lightyears ahead of Google's neverending stream of failed messaging services

• the value basically never pays off for me. I can buy the android device I want for around $300 and it becomes obsolete in 2-3 years, or I can buy an apple device for $1000 and it become obsolete in 5-7 years at best. Doesn't really add up. Sure the apple it might still work after 10, but who wants that? It will be old, slow, tiny storage...storage is the main issue I have. It's cool that old iphones still work but if I just wanted a phone that worked I'd buy something for $100
• agree on the app part of things, but I do like how android apps are more flexible. Also as someone who works in software development that makes apps, the apple store can fuck right off
• I have sent maybe 3 text messages in the past year, lol. 3rd party messenging apps are always better.

Equivalentally spec'd Android phones are more expensive. If you're talking about budget stuff, the iPhone SE is the most powerful budget phone out there basically giving you flagship performance for $400.

Regardless, you're from the UK right? I'm guessing people just have to buy phones at full price and don't really have good deals there. Out here in the US, even expensive stuff is basically free or close to it if you're staying for 24-30 months with the carrier. It's financed.
