God I hate this rhetoric. It's absolutely fearmongering at it's worst. We're all gonna be fine, likely for hundreds more years to come at the pace we're going. Thousands? Ehhh...

Not to write off climate change, it's a serious issue we NEED to address as a species. But this is no different from those people saying 'YOSEMITE IS GONNA BLOW ANY SECOND NOW!'.

It's frustrating, and only stresses the more insignificant people that can't change anything out. At the absolute worst, it's used as clickbait.

Annoying.

I don't know enough about science to comment on when humanity is gonna be fucked from climate change (not the point of no return, I mean mass extinction) but if it's not affecting my potential children/grandchildren I'm not that worried either. If it's 50 years from now that's scary. If it's 500 years, eh I won't be losing sleep

I don't think people realize that the vast vast vast majority of pollution has occurred in the past 100 years. It's definitely an unsustainable trajectory.

You can always tell who is scientifically illiterate by how they act to changing climate predictions. It shows that even the basics of the scientific method and how data emerges and is interpreted are poorly understood by the general public

It's not your fault tho. Education in these subjects are lacking, especially when it comes to critical thinking. And society as a whole is anti intellectual

Exactly. If you want people to care, you can't just don a tinfoil had every few seconds. Scare tactics don't work.

[LFAQs-redacted-quote]

It's more a case of people thinking the world will end from every natural disaster or random event ever. Yosemite is gonna erupt, global warming will kill us in X years, stuff that is absolutely false won't get people to change.

Of course, but there is no amount of pollution that would drive us to extinction within 100 years unless we nuke the atmosphere with a super pollution bomb lol.

Being sarcastic, but we won't be able to affect anything quick enough to kill us as a species within the next 100 years. 1000? That is possible.

Not anytime soon, but yes, it will. And we should worry about it and it's effect NOW.

You do realize I'm talking more or less about studies that end up getting sensationalized into being yet another doomsday clock, right? Then the flock of idiots who will run around saying the world is gonna end in the next 10 years or whatever?

Or are you just gonna keep acting like you're actually understanding of what the topic is about.

I'm not discrediting correct information.

But running around yelling Yosemite is gonna blow any moment, or is overdue for an explosion, doesn't help anyone.

Neither do the articles spouting false information. Scare tactics don't work, unless you're using them for clickbait.

Its not just the literal apocalypse you should think about. Its likely that well all experience the effects of major refugee crises caused by climate change within our lifetimes, for example.

The claim I was making has not been cited in any studies and only paraphrased by articles or doomsday theorists who misconstrued what studies have presented the information with, which is the exact same stuff they have been doing with Yosemite.

No scientist worth their salt would say we will go extinct via climate change by 2050. They'd be discredited immediately by people who actually have posted studies on this.

Again, I am trying to stress that we NEED to worry about climate change, but false information like what idiots will say about climate change causing our extinction in just a few years time will absolutely NOT help the cause in the slightest.

Yeah, I do. My bad. I'm admittedly pretty tired.

But a lot of people do believe it(people are arguing it's correct in this very topic). No reputable sources, but people do.

No, one person said 2100 is "kinda generous," and that could easily have been facetious. No one else is actually arguing that we're facing extinction in less than 80 years. Certainly not "people."

I think the main issue that many people have with climate change, and them basically pretending it doesn't exists, it that the changes incurred happen so slowly, it's not noticed, because society adapts to it.

Even something as simple as (most) cars being more fuel efficient than they were 30 years ago has helped. Anyone that wants a car still has one, and the fact that they more fuel efficient is something we notice day to day in our wallet (although not recently), not necessarily in our environment.

Many cars are getting 25-30 miles a gallon, whereas 35-40 years ago ZERO cars were that fuel efficient. That alone has slowed things down.

So that's an example of "Things will get REALLY bad if we don't do something!" because... we did something.
