So cringe lmao.

"I want them to have the experiences I had/the experiences I couldn't have."

Not only will younger kids probably not have an interest in it generally, but if you're the kid of a retro collector, being around it your whole life, there's a high chance it won't have the same appeal.

That's not to say their kids can't love it. I've seen some that do. But these guys should just admit they're doing it for themselves.

This coming from someone who has a collection worth thousands. But i have no illusions or excuses that it's some kind of legacy for my children. I know theyll probably be selling it when I die.

Thats the point. They sell it for money after you die. Why would they keep it?

They could invest the money in more useful ways. And the chances are your kids who don't know as much about each item as you will have to sell most of the collection in bulk for pennies on the dollar. Honestly I put this under the excuses category.

Def true. My kids are really hard to predict. Most older games they dont care much about. However my 5yr old took a shine to Mario Tennis (64) and Mario Maker (technically retro) and my 3yr old is really into Super Metroid and Kirbys Adventure.

I mean in general. Unless the stuff was sentimental, why keep it?

I can tell you one thing, plastic degrades like a mother fuck. Ive got some 79 Star Wars figures that are permanently sticky from the plastic degrading. Same with some 86 MASK figures. Ive begun to wonder if theyre even healthy to keep around. Who knows what kind of toxic shit theyre off gassing? In another 30 years theyll probably be a puddle of goo. So I dont know how wise it is to invest in plastic crap.

BTW, if were talking video games, my local video game store has crates of Atari 2600 games under the NES table. Some for like a buck. Nobody wants them. One day people are going to view your PS2 games the same way. As unplayable junk.

This may sound weird but keep in mind while those games are old, for the kid those games are new to them. They will enjoy those games, assuming those games as good.

Why would the kid care if it is old, when the kid has never played it before? For all the kid knows he may think it is new.

Despite the fact that I wrote this topic, I want to mention that with how invested in retro I am, I will probably have my kids play almost exclusively retro games, so I suspect they will have a taste for it if they become gamers. At least until they get a little older and start going to friends' houses.

How well have you taken care of that stuff though over the years. Is it packed away nicely but accessible, just tossed around laying wherever, sitting on a shelf....

Anyone who claims "plastic doesn't decompose" never had to deal with a box of disintegrating Transformers from the 80s. The metallic-plastic Transformers from the 90s are probably dust by now.

The few remaining plastic figures I keep in a shoebox don't seem any kind of melted. Paint's horribly worn, texture feels weird, but I have a Happy Meals Blue Ranger from 1995 that looks the same as ever.

You're probably thinking of Gold Plastic Syndrome. G2 Transformers and Beast Wars were notorious for it. Beast Wars Megatron with fall to pieces if you look at him the wrong way.

Vintage Star Wars figures start breaking down and become sticky as the plastic degrades. It's oil leaking from the plastic. I've had the most problems with original Star Wars figures and MASK figures, both made by Keener. Vintage He-Man figures actually exhibit what's known as Crotch Rot where the plastic degrades near the hip joints. They also suffer degradation in the form of "plastic mold" spots. GI Joe plastic on the other hand becomes incredibly brittle. That's why a "Grunt" figure without broken thumbs is incredibly rare.

Incredibly well in a dark air conditioned environment. It didn't prevent the plastic from breaking down. Just like you can find yellowed figures from sealed boxes.
