An NYPD van struck and killed a man begging for change on a Brooklyn street Thursday night, police and a witness said.

The marked van was traveling on Eastern Parkway when it collided with the victim, who is believed to have been homeless, near Schenectady Ave. in Crown Heights about 8:10 p.m., an NYPD spokesman said.

Witness Dequan Bass, 59, said the man was standing in his usual spot the painted median in the middle of the street when the van hit him.

The brother was in the middle of the street. He stood there every day, trying to get a few dollars to eat, Bass said. He begged for change and quarters before the light would change from different cars.

Bass said he saw the gruesome moment of impact, and the van drag the victim about 35 feet.

The light was about to change and the van was trying to make it, he said. They came through and hit him. Boom! It was like the sound of two cars crashing.

He added: I was shouting, Yo, youre dragging him! They dragged him down the block. He was under the van, and I said, Yo, hes dead.

An officer tried to resuscitate the man, with no success, Bass said. He touched his neck and then he stopped. He was gone, Bass said.

The man, who has not yet been identified, was taken to Kings County Hospital, but he couldnt be saved.

So these cops did something that they typically give us tickets for, and in doing so killed a man. But theyll just cry and say how sorry they are and get away with it.

Jumping into the middle of the street is dangerous. Doing it every day means that your likely cause of death will be getting run over in that very spot. This isn't news.

The brother was in the middle of the street. He stood there every day..."

OMG who could have predicted the brother would be hit by a car.... in the middle of the street. How fucking stupid would a person have to be to turn this into a story about police brutality? I'm serious. I don't think a person with an IQ over 85 would be able to look at this and not realize they would look like a drooling idiot if they tried to turn into some police brutality cause.

Fuck off, you know as well as I do that if I tried to blow through a yellow light and hit a dude my ass is going down for manslaughter. But because a cop did it, and all he did was kill a homeless dude (who our society generally views as less than human anyway) nothing is going to happen.

I stand my point.

If someone read "THE BROTHER WAS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE STREET. HE STOOD THERE EVERY DAY." - in a story about a hobo that got hit by a cop car blaring sirens and lights and thinks police brutality that person is a moron.

Like a legit person that we should pity rather than debate with. This is not a story about police brutality. If someone thinks it is a story about police brutality we should consider them special and pat them on the head.

There isn't room for debate here. A guy that jumps into traffic every single fucking day got hit by a car. This isn't a social justice issue.

I think the argument here if a normal person run through that light as recklessly as the cop did, their ass would be in prison

but since it was a cop that ran him over, more than likely theyll be suspended with pay pending an investigation and then eventually go back to work

even if theyre fired, police unions usually throw every fucking rule in the system to reverse the firing and they get their job back anyway

its extremely unlikely that the cop will be fired and throw in prison

a Normal Person only has one ending - prison

Nah, more like if a normal person ran over the homeless guy no story. Just go through insurance and settle like a civil matter. But since this one involves a cop, mainstream media sees fresh meat and like vultures are capitalizing on the situation to generate clicks and to push their narrative cause they know the cop haters out there will click and get outraged.

They don't, but it is trendy to hate on police now and they have an incentive to do so because it generates clicks. First and foremost they are all about maximizing clicks and views. What better way than to publish a negative story involving cops. They know the cop haters are gonna eat it up.

"How can we make society a safe place for homeless people that jump into traffic a hundred times a day while stoned or drunk out of their fucking mind" is not one of the big issues we need to solve as a society.

this is a weird meltdown. You went from standing in the painted medium which is what happened to jumping in front of traffic to jumping in front on traffic a hundred times a day while stoned or drunk out of their fucking mind.

something tells me youve got some personal issues you need to work out here.

Didn't know insurance covered negligent homicide.

Or that one could settle in civil court if one kills a man jaywalking.
