I need more reading material and young adult kind of strikes the right balance for me. They're not overly violent but they're not afraid to have people die or other horrible things occasionally.

  • Harry Potter series
  • Hunger Games (though I only like the first one)
  • Ender's game
  • Eragon (inheritance cycle)

Just finished Harry Potter for the third or fourth time and I need something new.

Currently listening to Dresden Files which is about another wizard named Harry but it's an adult series.

idk if it's a young adult book, but I feel it's appropriate for young adults - The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho, if you haven't read it yet.

it's short, and tells a simple, yet meaningful story, IMO.

Harry Potter isn't even in the top 20 YA series, the most noteworthy thing about the books is they got a lot of people into reading. Unfortunately, many of them only ever read the HP books so they never moved on.

Edit: I forgot to say the Percy Jackson series is amazing

Not sure if they're actually counted as young adult or just kids books, but read the animorphs if you haven't read them before.

I am immensely fond of the Old Kingdom series by Garth Nix. And if audiobooks are something you like, the Abhorsen trilogy of his books is read by Tim Motherfuckin Curry and is absolutely amazing.

Please Netflix, make a series. Please?

William Sleator has a lot of really interesting young adult sci-fi novels. Some of them date back to the 70s, so I'm not entirely sure how everything holds up these days, but House of Stairs was every bit as disturbing as I remembered when I reread it last year.

Good Sleator books I remember:

House of Stairs
Singularity
Interstellar Pig
The Duplicate
The Boy Who Reversed Himself

The Dark is Rising Sequence by Susan Cooper is one of my favorites.

And everything by Tamora Pierce. I'd start with her Song of the Lioness quartet for her Tortall books, and Circle of Magic quartet for her Emelan books.

Dragonlance skirts YA and regular fantasy as well I think. Main books to read would be the Chronicles and Time of the Twins trilogies.

There's also the Coldfire Trilogy by C.S. Friedman if you want something a bit more dark fantasy/sci-fi. Might be a bit too dark if violence is something you're trying to avoid though.
