No it really is

Yeah. It actually is legitimately good.

1 - It's a legit parody / homage to all the previous FF games, but that aspect of it is subtle until you realize what it's doing

2 - The story is weird and vague early on and that's actually intentional. But what's more interesting is that it's not as vague as it seems once you know what's going on.

That's not actually the whole story. Funny video though.

The story being legit good by the end was a welcome surprise. Jack is a really fun protagonist. (This is not an April Fools.)

Dunkey's video is also an appropriate reaction to everything, that said lmao.

The awkward and bad dialogue is only awkward and bad because you assume things are happening / people are meeting in the same way that they do normally. But that's not actually how the game's world works, and if you read the flavor text found in level descriptions, it becomes a lot more apparent.

But if you pay really close attention, there's little things they say that don't actually make sense in the normal course of events. And those are what actually matter. Like Jed randomly quipping "but she drowned last time?" or "oh, that's where she went this time."

Nah darkroast has been shilling this game from beginning switching from thinking it's some big brain ironic masterpiece to now claiming its legitimately good

Later, theres a level that feels like it should be far more open than it is. Its a forested level, and the landscape that youre looking out and over certainly suggests openness, but youre constrained to a very obviously and obnoxiously narrow path instead. Its almost ridiculous just how overt and arbitrary the level artists and designers have been to funnel your movements through this level. Youll start thinking to yourself what a wasted opportunity this is but then youll hear the Final Fantasy XIII soundtrack in the background, and suddenly youre clued into the joke. The entire level becomes very funny then.

That's the kind of humor the game has.

I say it's brilliant because it really is brilliant. I've never seen a game so bold with its subversiveness and so willing to let the player figure out the deeper context.

In a level inspired by the completely irrational ending to FFIV, you're on a spaceship going to the Moon, and several people in your party comment on how it makes literally no sense that you can be on a spaceship and everyone is wearing medieval armor. You only get the joke if you've played Final Fantasy 4, and had the same "wtf how are there spaceships in this game" realization.

It's a kind of humor that you will only understand if you have played all of the classic Final Fantasy games.

So zoom back to the beginning - Cornelia, the Warriors of Light, the plot being paper-thin and dumb.

You know, just like FF1 actually is

Think about it -

In FF1 - How did your characters meet? What's their backstory? Motivations? Do they have any goal in the first game other than the one single task they're given by the king of Corneria? Does anyone actually read any of the dialogue in Final Fantasy 1, or do they skip right through it so they can go kill the final boss? Every level and plot line in SoP is a cleverly subversive parody of the Final Fantasy game it represents.

One of my favorites is when the author of the flavor text mocks the FF6 level's architecture for being a "silly mess of magic and technology that probably sounded better on paper."

Yeah, there's a lot of details that are obviously jokes if you get them, but just seem stupid to anyone else.

Even small things that aren't actually an overt joke, like Jack's gang's crystals all being spheres -- because of how "crystal" was mistranslated as "orb" in the original FF1. It's something you might chuckle at if you're in the know, but otherwise just an earnest part of the plot otherwise. But it's also done as a neat foreshadowing plot point to indicate they're not the real warriors of light.

It kinda reminds me of how Kojima writes things super goofily but 100% earnestly at the same time.

But people just see Square Enix and go "lol the kingdom hearts guys, this writing is gonna be garbage haha" and don't bother using more than 2 braincells to actually consider if something is being done satirically or not.

Honestly, it probably was a mistake from a sales standpoint to make the humor so dependent on prior knowledge of Final Fantasy games. It's about as subtly subversive as it gets (although interestingly it becomes a lot less subtle once you pick up on it)

You don't even need knowledge of previous FF games to get all the jokes.

I mean, Jack literally whips out a smartphone and starts blasting Limp Bizkit because he doesn't want to listen to someone ramble off stock JRPG dialogue. How people don't *get* what they're doing is beyond me.

Shortly after that scene she asks him "why do you think we keep getting amnesia?" And he thinks for a bit and says "because everything else is just a distraction from killing chaos" and at that point it's pretty clear there's a deeper meaning to what he's saying.

All the superfluous story BS - he doesn't care, because he's seen it so many times, with a million variations, all of it nonsensical and irrelevant. It's a surprisingly bold assessment of Final Fantasy as a staple of the genre.

Honestly it was an amazing game until the exact moment it became grindy. The story and areas really do feel almost like satire of the biggest complaints and praises of their respective areas.
FFXIV making no sense having the story saying it's pirates but then you fight a sahagin boss
FFXIII being obnoxiously constrained until you get to the watery area
FFV having canons blocking your way through but after that you uhh never see them again
FFXII tomb is even more confusing to navigate and way longer between save points than what areas had come before
FFVII and all million ladders, if you're just looking for the way forward it's easy to navigate but you'll get lost looking for every hidden chest and story note in the area because you need to backtrack to the beginning with both key cards
