I've been professionally involved in the beer industry for the past decade, serving as a brewer, sales rep, nationally accredited beer judge and now back to overseeing and running a brewery at all levels and I cannot fucking stand the average beer drinker anymore. Shit like untappd has ruined the average person's knowledge and forces breweries into certain styles of beer to make profits.

Just the other day I had someone tell me my west coast style IPA wasn't an IPA because it wasn't hazy or juicy. Or that my Hoppy Farmhouse Ale that has saison nowhere in its name isn't a saison.

We make traditional sours, not overly sweet and fruited American kettle sour abominations and constantly get chided for it by people with shit palates that want a fruit juice smoothie.

Old man yelling at the sky but craft beer has turned to shit over the last decade because of a lack of rules and regulations in the industry and giving too much power and voice to the consumer.

Yeah, I work in the brewing industry and the shit my customers ask/say to me drives me insane.

We do barrel aged sours as well so I definitely relate to that part. People expect 50 pounds of lactose in a strawberry kiwi mango Fruity Pebble smoothie.

As a beer drinker who just likes beer that tastes good and isn't a snob, I'm sorry for the shitters that ruin it.

I just try beers and drink beers that I like

Saison is freaking great though, wish more breweries would brew it.

What are your go-to lambics? I've only tried Lindemann's (my ex loved them) and I can't fuck with that low abv.

Most of Lindemann's is shit because it's back sweetened with stevia. Cantillon is the goat but if abv is your concern, well, lambic probably isn't for you. Most lambic/geuze won't be more than 8%. Tilquin, 3F and Boon you can probably find pretty easily out in Cali.

You completely summed up why I got out of the craft beer scene after being so enthusiastically into it at first.

The IPA thing is interesting because as little as 10 years ago hazy IPA's weren't even really a thing

I'm sorry bro but I have to disagree with this take. But yeah I live in SoCal and the oversaturation of IPAs here is f***ing ridiculous, most places will have a selection that consists of 90-95% IPAs and maybe a handful of other styles. I don't even hate IPAs I just want more variety and choices

Red beer = good
Yellow beer = moar refreshy
Wheat beer = good
Whatever IPA is = too bitter for me

I would never argue with anyone about anything relating to beer because I don't know shit about beer.

I can definitely tolerate a lambic here and there, but more and more local breweries are focusing on fruited sours and IPAs that they aren't doing creative shit with anything else. I would die for more ales and darks being available.

And if I want a change of pace from those, there are always lagers.

Theres places around here that took the specialized beer culture and basically said ok this beer is special so were gonna sell it for $25/4 16oz pack

Nope, kettle sours are modern day abominations. Traditional sours are long fermentation processes as a result from naturally occurring microbes in the air and wood.

I like some sours but yeah the flavors people make now are just too much. IPAs let the bandwagon on 'crazy' flavors IMO and sours followed suit.

Thank god stouts and porters don't let you get that crazy just from the base flavors of them. Those were always my favorite in college.

I agree. If one person says that they are dumb but if all your customers are saying that then maybe you should listen. Yes they may be wrong but theyre also telling you what they want. If the masses want hazy or juicy then maybe theres money to be made brewing beer that way.

Just my opinion. I like beer but I dont care about all the different kinds. Theres too many now.

im really big on dark beers especially stouts and porters
