I feel like, regardless of how you might feel about the actual joke, when it came to being hit, Chris Rock handled things in the best way possible.

he was professional, diffused tensions with a joke, and kept things moving.

Which would be for the best, if that's the kase. His inaction makes him favorable for defending, in the general public's eye. He'd have less going for him if he doubled down or the two started brawling right then and there.
