The only horde modes I can remember playing are WWZ and After the Fall.
I liked WWZ, you earn points that let you set up turrets, electric fences, barbed wire, upgrade weapons, buy medkits, etc., So it's half shooter, half tower defense mode

Gears 5 Horde devolves into pure Tower Defense once the Engineer has been given enough energy(in-match currency that teammates can share with you). Even the hardest difficulty can feel like a breeze once the turrets and fences can take care of most waves.

Ah. Yeah I can't really think of any games where I spent much time playing something like that, unless we're talking tower defense games or something.
