My 8-year old niece has been playing this alot lately and I noticed there is an open chat in-game. When I paid attention to the text, it seemed to be other little kids spewing non-sense

As far as I know, it has a chat filter that blocks inappropriate language and personally identifiable information.

But online interactions being what they are, I don't know what kinds of things the kids say to each other.

Mostly harmless, but probably worth using parental control options of some kind. At very least, supervision from time to time just to make sure nothing weird's going on.

Mostly yes, but child predators exist so it's a good idea for someone to check in and talk to her about what people she's talking to

It's a cool game, I always checked in on time to time with my kid to make sure nothing weird was going on and that they knew not to use the chat. If they y were playing with their friends in real life, they communicated over the phone, like their own Xbox party.

i thought it was primarily targeted at kids. if it has ingame chat, treat it the same as any other online space you allow your kids to go to and carefully monitor it

It's basically a child-centric chatroom of sorts. Personally, I'd avoid it as even though it has moderators, bad stuff can still filter through.
