The manga was originally designed as a storybook and the style shows, but the anime has a more classic western cartoon style. It's animated by Wit studio, who also did Attack on Titan and Great Pretender, and the animation is great, especially in the last handful of episodes. Even the music is great: the background music is timed perfectly to the scenes and action and the second opening has an oddly catchy and sweet song.

It's mostly based on The Emperor's New Clothes and other western folktales. The story itself is very childish, but also extremely charming. There's few if any Japanese-isms to handwave away (one kancho, unfortunately), it's closer to a Disney cartoon than Demon Slayer. The characters are complex and have mostly logical motivations, though it takes a while to understand them. I could seriously see myself watching this babysitting a 6 year-old or watching it myself when I was 6 with my parents. It deals with disability, self-confidence, bigotry, greed, and death. There are a few scenes with light amounts of blood (I don't remember much more) and some scenes with heavy amounts of black-gloop-blood as well as a few deaths. The snake doesn't die. The openings do spoil a whole lot.

I can't recommend it to everyone. The pacing changes throughout the series, but it only takes one or two episodes to tell whether it's your cup of tea. For a long while, there's not much action, it's more focused on the story and characters. Like I said, it's pretty childish, so don't go in expected sex and violence. But, it has a really sweet story with great art and animation. I know I'm a bit late to the party, but if you like critical darlings you should check it out.
