Had not heard of a stock dividend before I thought there were only cash dividends. So everyone holding will get like 3.33 shares for every share held (due to outstanding shares going from 300,000,000 to 1,000,000,000)? You are paying a premium (the call option) to have the option to purchase 100 shares of a stock at a set price on or before a set date in the future. Example: You buy one call option for SNDL at a strike price of $3 expiring in Jan 2024 for $0.05. You pay $5 ($0.05 x 100). Then if SNDL goes up to $6 on or before Jan 2024, you can exercise that option and pay only $3/share even though the market price is $6. Thus getting a gain of ~$300 right there and then, and you only paid $5. So, huge gain. That is essentially how the math works and how its possible to make a crazy amount of money off options. Also keep in mind that you can trade the option just like its a stock. Buyer (right to exercise) Seller (obligation to fulfill) Call: Buyer has the right to buy the stock at the strike price. Seller is obligated to sell it. Put: Buyer has the right to sell the stock at the strike price. Seller is obligated to buy it. The contract can only be exercised if its in the money, meaning its actually beneficial to the Buyer. If it never gets in the money and expires, thats a win for the Seller who walks away with the premium paid. The Call Buyer is bullish because theyre anticipating being able to reserve a cheaper price (strike price) to buy as market value rises. Likewise the Put Buyer is bearish because theyre anticipating being able to reserve a higher price to sell as market value decreases. The Sellers are making premiums from selling the contracts and just hoping those contracts never get in the money, so their market attitudes are opposite of above. Buying Options give you greater leverage but also greater risk. They can also serve as hedges to your existing portfolio. Likewise Selling Options can serve as additional income.
