There was always an excuse on how horrible buying a house can be, and often those excuses were overblown. I'm paying less than $50/sqft for my current house mortgage, tax and all. Unlike rent, mortgages never go up unless you have an ARM loan. If I want to move I can easily sell it. And I put like 5% down payment on it. You just have to have good credit. In the long run, it's always better to buy.
