A 17-month old girl has been killed by a dog less than a week after her family bought the pet, police in St Helens have said.
Bella-Rae Birch died in hospital after being attacked on Monday afternoon in Bidston Avenue in Blackbrook.
In a statement given via Merseyside Police, the family thanked the community for their support.
They said: "We would ask that we are now allowed some space and time to try and come to terms with the tragic loss of our much-loved Bella-Rae.
"She will be sadly missed but never forgotten."
Superintendent Steve Brizell said: "Bella-Rae has lost her life in the most unimaginably terrible circumstances and our thoughts are first and foremost with the family and the wider community at this devastating time.
"Our specialist family liaison officers are providing the family of Bella-Rae with support and officers will remain in the area in the coming days to provide further reassurance and support for the wider community.
"At this stage we understand that the family dog they had bought just a week earlier has attacked Bella-Rae inside the family home.
"Bella-Rae was taken by ambulance to hospital by paramedics but despite the best efforts of police officers at scene, paramedics and doctors sadly Bella-Rae died as a result of her injuries yesterday afternoon.
"It has left a family and a community grieving and in complete shock."
The force said the dog had been humanely destroyed and work was ongoing to determine its breed and its previous owners.
Joanne Matthews, a 53 year old neighbour, told the PA news agency: "She was such a beautiful little girl, toddling about.
"I'd see the family in passing, just to say hello, and they were always very pleasant."
Ms Matthews said she saw an ambulance outside the house in Bidston Avenue at about 3.50pm on Monday and then about 10 police vehicles arrive.
She said: "I saw them bring the dog out. I couldn't tell what breed it was but from the back it looked like a Staffordshire bull terrier or pit bull."
Locals in the "quiet" road fought back tears as they fondly remembered watching the tot playing with her brother.
Another resident, who did not wish to be named, told South West News Service: "They were a lovely family, and it's just devastating what has happened.
"The dog had a stocky build, it was a Staffordshire terrier or Pitbull, and it was fully grown. There was only one.
"It's devastating. This is a normal quiet street, and the children would play in the street. The little girl, a toddler, was always about. It's a shame I won't be able to see that again.
"I don't remember seeing anything at all until the ambulance arrived.
"They were a very pleasant family, with two kids."

If anyone is wondering, the pit bull that attacked my neighbor is now mysteriously gone. After 2 visits by Animal Control, the dog is no longer in the backyard. I dont know if he escaped again and didnt come back or if they just got rid of him.

I saw the damage the pit bull did to my neighbors dog. It was pretty extensive for a 20 second fight.

You should never leave any dog alone with your kid. Especially a dog you just got. Relocation is a stressful time for any animal and now you're introducing a whole new person into the space.

I honestly wish there was more to getting a dog than just literally getting a dog.

Lol, I'm not defending pit bulls by any stretch. I acknowledge they're dangerous as hell. Still, this was likely preventable.

Mostly good advice, but grown dogs need love, too. Just be ready for some personality quirks (and be very careful with children)

This is one of my counter arguments for people judging me (and you'd be surprised how many do) for breeding my dog and selling her litter for a profit. I provide new puppies that are basically a blank slate, with introductions to crate training and house training. Plus, they've been socialized with children.

It takes work so why the hell would I just donate all those dogs or sell them for like a $100 a pop like some people think I should?

idk really and i also dont really give a shit, but my wife got a special breed of cat and the breeder sent her a genetic test to confirm its breed.

we had a full blood corgi when i was a kid that was AKC registered that really didnt look like a corgi, but only because it had weird AF markings.

either way, witnesses in this case said it looked like a pit

nah you can adopt grown dogs. Dogs dont talk so they cant be like "hey bro this whole situation is stressing me out. Now you brought in this baby that cries all the time. I'm freaking out"

Stressed dogs pee or bite. I've volunteered in shelters. A lot of dogs that are brought in are dogs that people either can't keep cause of a move or people who got dogs but arent equipped to raise them. Dogs that are too violent are usually put down.

Fuck pitbulls and fuck their defenders. And fuck that family for bringing in a new dog around an infant and not being aware that something bad could happen. How could you possibly let a child that young around a dog unattended, or without being hypervigilant of both the child and dogs behavior.

Unless they're senior dogs. A lot of people are fucking assholes who just drop off their old dog because they don't wanna deal with the increased vet bills and then they end up dying alone in a cage wondering why their family didn't come back.

bro. Why are you pressed? I didn't even bring up pitties. But people mention dangerous breeds don't realize that includes lots of beloved breeds.

I have a Siberian Husky, who I had to get listed as service animal so I could find an apartment.

I've been around enough Pits and mutts with Pit DNA that are total sweethearts btw, but I'd never say they're not dangerous. It's important to remember any large dog is a potential danger to a child though.

Ive only known two pits, both good dogs

One was an adopted female that was a former bait dog (she would cry and run away at the sight of a broom), she was really gentle/kind and basically just wanted a nice life of not getting beat.

The other one was a big dumb fuck, good dog but at the same time I could see why pits are dangerous because homie was DUMB

Grown dogs aren't the problem.

I adopted this tiny little fella. 5-6 lbs. Full grown adult.

Yeah all of my dogs have been fully grown shelter dogs. also none of them have been over 25 pounds so lol. My current dog would genuinely be a menace to society if he had pitbull size and strength, he's ridiculously aggressive.

Friend of mine had one and it was gentle and nice as well, but even while playing he could cause some harm. Those dogs are born with ripped muscles for some reason.

I wouldnt say outright ban pitbulls...just some restrictions. Having them trained, not having one if you have toddlers. Down to earth, sensible stuff.

I've often wondered if the Pitbull hate is overblown because there are just so many of them compared to other breeds. Are they more violent than German Shepherds or Bullmastiffs? You can't just say "lets ban this breed because they killed 40 people" without looking at percentages. What if Bullmastiffs killed a handful of people too? There are probably 100 times more pitbulls out there than Bullmastiffs.
