I think I vaguely remember local telephone calls in pay phones costing 20 cents. I definitely remember when they were 25 cents. I remember a pack of regular cigarettes (Marlboros and Camels) cost $2. I remember the cheapest unleaded gas costing like $1.07 per gallon.

McDonald's had those 29 cent hamburgers, IIRC.

A dollar could get you like several pieces of candy at the liquor store.

A soda can cost 50 cents at a vending machine.

Burgers were a nickel

Nothing, because I was a lot faster back then.

A bag of Doritos was a dollar

Cigarettes and liquor stores, thats some childhood you had!

Pop used to be 600ml and cost 1.14, which was 99 cents plus tax

What do pay phones cost now?

I remember getting gas when it was like 89 cents a gallon.

Candy bars were .50 and those boxes of Lemon Heads, Cherry Clan, Boston Baked Beans, etc. Were all only .10. That's in US dollars.

A bowl of pho was $5.50. Lunch specials in general were around $7.

I remember getting a big bag of mixed candy for like $1 at local convenience stores. Hot dogs were also $1. Whenever my brother had a hockey game, my parents would give me $2 to get both of those.

I remember an "get an x under the ringpull and win a free can of diet coke" promotion

I bought 1 can and won 4 times in a row

the shopkeeper thought I was cheating but gave me my free cans

promotions like that don't see to exist anymore

I remember the $0.29 McDs hamburgers. Although I seem to recall them only doing it a few times as a special promotion.

I remember most new video games selling for $40-50.

I remember Denny's Grand Slam Breakfast being dirt cheap. I don't remember the exact price, but I think it was under $3? I forget.

I can go to malls and and fun with friends with $5 , now with my gf, our food usually cost much more than that

We got Disneyland season passes for under 100 bucks when I was a kid IIRC

I remember a small bottle of Pop being $1.14 with tax. That's CAD, mind. The most expensive gas I saw was $0.53 a litre. Could rent a video game for $5 a weekend.

I remember a Chinese restaurant that had a cigarette vending machine. The only place I've ever seen it.

Hotwheels cars were 79, a small bag of chips was 25. A brand new PS2 game would be $49.99, I remember with the PS3 they upped it to $59.99 and my mom said we need a new hobby.

I have very vague memories of a time when gas was literally around .75-1.05 at the more expensive places. But wouldn't be long until I was used to seeing always .89-$1.20 most of the time when I was young.

But yeah, I remember the .50 vending machines and if you could find knock off brands you could sometimes snag a 12 oz. can for .25.

I remember pay phones too. And I remember when just $10 could change a kid's whole week or felt like winning the lottery if you went to the mall or out just looking for candy or simple toys.

And yeah, I still remember when McD's started touting the dollar menu because the regular prices went way up and people grumbled.

Now, it's $10 for a combo at fast food joints for a single person and you might be able to buy a fraction of the candy for triple the price (well, except right after key holidays when everything is marked half-off or more lol).

Hell, when I first started working at Target and had to stock the food sections regularly (11 years ago), I watched basic ass small lunchable kits (like, the ones where you just rip the plastic off and go), rise in price from .89-98 a pop to like $1.75 in a little under 2 years. I think places like Wal-Mart can afford to still sell them just under $2, but I've seen a few grocery stores have them now around $2.50 a pop. Kind of crazy when you think about it.

Drawbacks of switching to a credit standard and abandoning gold and silver. The system will collapse under it's own weight before we know it...well, technically it's collapsing now.
