I've seen these terms used interchangeably. If you were to ask me "what is big, and I said 'huge', and what is "huge", and I said "big". That would be unclear.

So what's a detailed explanation on a smart alec? Being smart or wise shouldn't be a bad thing, but in these contexts, it seems like a bad thing.

yup, you nailed it. I noticed this often when I was a young kid.

It really proves how fragile people's egos can be. That you can't take being called out by a little kid.

Truth be told I can admit being corrected can potentially be annoying, but being called out by a kid would probably not be as bad, since they mean no harm, and if they can correct you, you probably deserve to be corrected anyway.

I don't think these people truly know everything, its just these people outsmarted someone in a particular situation and that person got their feelings hurt.

Not always. There are countless instances where someone thinks they've outsmarted the other person, only to reveal themselves as ignorant and wrong because of their ego and poor judgement.

They probably won't be called a smart alec then. They will probably just be corrected.

When someone wants to be passive aggressive about a solution to a problem- usually by pointing out something that happened earlier but it can't be fixed and has no real use being brought up besides them wanting to make everyone think they wouldn't have done that something that results in where you are now

So you're claiming you're smart and doing it to be an ass

I've seen it used in an immediate correction situation.

This it's like if someone made a whole long post talking about their depression or something and all you can contribute is "You used the wrong they're/their/there" that's being a smart aleck / wise ass has been for me.

Basically, smart alecs are essentially referred to people who come off as if they have to correct others anytime or place someone slips up, no one likes a smart alec because its obnoxious caring about being right that much and also annoying how it comes off to others

have you never been called a smartass in your entire life?

how do you define "taking it well", just sucking it up and not questioning things?

I think it more has to do when people believe they are above others, and the people "below them" outsmart them, and flip the tables.

It can be used that way, thats like when people say wise ass when they have no retort to valid or contextually important points being made in the conversation. But when the term is used appropriately I think its more applicable to what I said.

[LFAQs-redacted-quote]

I'm trying to get a clear understanding of what it means.

I believe society uses terms (and not just this one), in very fluid ways, in order to suit their personal, at the time agenda, without committing to a particular definition. I don't believe this is healthy for an intellectually honest society. This is part of why society has problems, because people refuse to humble themselves when they are wrong, and will instead use intellectual dishonesty to preserve their pride.
