I just dont know how to get practice in this game. If I make my own lobby, someone comes in thats way better than me so I dont learn. If I go into another lobby I win and then the host kicks me even if its close

In my opinion you shouldn't focus on winning and losing so much when trying to get better. Yes it is a valid metric for measuring progress. But playing against players better than you who will probably be beating you most if not all of the time is fine, maybe even ideal. You should pick one thing to focus on bettering each time you play to start. DI to escape combos and survive, winning neutral, practicing punish game. You shouldn't expect to excel at everything at once. There are plenty of tutorial videos, find something that interest you and fuck around with it, win or lose.

i got better by getting stomped

i find pgr players semi-regularly online and i always rematch because they're the best source of challenge and the best way to improve is to fight someone who won't fall for "wifi tricks" and you can learn off them. yesterday i ran into a top texas player and got rolled a few games, but i eventually learned to vary up my neutral because he kept punishing my poor play and eventually things clicked and i started winning a few games, with a 3-stock and a 2-stock in there

because of my disability and location it's basically impossible for me to get irl experience, so if i ever run into pros or a significantly better player i will milk the session for what it's worth

Like, at the end of the day, it's a game. And losing ain't fun, especially if you're BTFO. Yeah, you're not wrong in saying that fighting people better than you helps you get better. But still, the last thing someone wants to hear is "Keep on losing". You can't get better from losing if losing discourages you and you stop playing altogether.

Back to AK so I wont see you boys on smash for quite a while most likely

The two of you should jump into some of my late-night lobbies. We tend to play more random characters and usually matches don't get too heated or super serious. Like, items are still off, but it might be a bit more welcoming to new/casual players.

This is a thinly veiled way of me saying I'm not as good as the rest of the guys in these threads, lol.

He's saying he wants to practice to get better, though, presumably to put up a fight against strong opponents. Not to say you can't progress by fighting equally and lesser skilled opponents. But it's probably far less efficient. I would say definitely, though I suppose I can't prove it lol.

i mention this because, can someone at such a high level teach someone who is at a low level? not saying he can't, just curious. i think it's possible, but might be harder to comprehend if the person can't "dumb it down"

Strictly online, I think tournaments are a great way to get practice, most of those people are really good and stomp me but I feel like I learn a lot.

Anthers Ladder has also been sweet for finding good matches the last couple weeks, you can just look for friendlies or do ranked matches, it has been pretty active lately

That's actually a really great point. I feel like getting your ass kicked is way more helpful to someone who's already really good at the game, compared to someone who's in the mid range since recognizing your mistakes and adjusting your play style is more of a high level skill/adaptation. If there's a huge difference in ability and you're getting completely outplayed, you're not going to learn much.

If anything, I would argue that idea of getting better by losing does hold up, but mostly when playing dittos, since you can directly learn and apply things your opponent is doing for the character you're actively playing.
Like, if you're playing Marth and getting 3-stocked by someone playing a real good Dedede, you're not going to learn much practical knowledge for the cast at large. But Marth dittos would actually be really beneficial even if you're losing because you'll at least gain some understanding of what you could do with him.
