They should slip in a transgender character out of spite.

Just because the author is bad doesn't mean you shouldn't be able to support their work which isn't related to why the author is said bad.

I'm definitely torn on this. Having spent decades with the Harry Potter world, and having so many of my favorite memories being associated with Harry Potter, from reading the original books with my mom and brother, to seeing midnight showings with my friends, to dressing up as Harry Potter characters with my wife, Rowling's stance on trans people feels more like a true betrayal rather than just random person being a bigot.

At this point I'm kind of just hoping that the game is bad so I don't have to make a decision about playing it.

I believe they said that would be an option to be transgender in the game. If I end up playing the game I'm definitely doing that out of spite.

I've never read or watched anything Harry Potter. However, I love open world games and it does look like it could be good. If I did decide to get it I'd have to watch the movies though so I don't know.
I'm going through the same thing with Mad Max. The game looks good but I haven't watched the movies.

How are house elves not slaves?

If this is the case then they're volunteers rather than slaves.

That isn't exactly a good message to be sending in the book, especially since claiming that people are happy being slaves is an argument that has been used in real life to justify slavery.

Except that buying the game financially supports the author and keeps her culturally relevant, and she takes that money and cultural relevance to fight against trans people.
I've got no problem with reading something like H.P. Lovecraft where the author is long dead and not using the money to actively support bigotry and hatred.

However, if somebody asks how they are not slaves, they're not.

Except that even in the universe they are. They are literally bound by magic to serve their human masters and are not able to dis-obey. Just because most of them are fine with the situation doesn't mean they aren't slaves.

I was under the impression that the magic isn't actually what binds them, as they are far more powerful than the wizards and witches they serve. I thought it was their desire to stick to an honour system that kept them serving?

The books take place in the 90s. This game is set in the late 1800s. So you don't necessarily need to read the books. You won't see many familiar characters in this game. Just 1 ghost, and possibly a young Dumbledore. I'm not sure how old he is supposed to be
